Grams on charmed DEFAULT

Way back when, on a little TV network called UPN, Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano starred in the hit show 'Charmed,' in which they played three sister witches, known as the Charmed Ones, battling the forces of evil while trying to maintain some sense of normalcy. As the years went by -- especially towards its eighth and final season -- the storylines became wicca ridiculous and the dialogue became too cheesy for many to stomach. But ultimately, the show still lingers in the hearts and minds of its dedicated fans. Let's take a look back at the cast and see where they are now.

Shannen Doherty, Prue Halliwell

Then: As the eldest of the on-screen sisters, Shannen Doherty, of '' fame, played Prue, the witch with the power of telekinesis (initially only activated by intensely squinting her eyes) and astral projection. The actress left the show after season 3 amidst rumors that she was feuding with co-star Alyssa Milano. However, her official statement was that "there was too much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work." So Prue was killed off.

Now: While she's by no means "out of work," Doherty hasn't found as bright a spotlight as the one given to her through 'Charmed.' If you haven't seen the more recent '' series on The CW, any number of her made-for-TV movies or that now-canceled Syfy reality show she hosted, 'Scare Tactics,' you'll now her best as that woman on the Education Connection commercial this commercial:

Holly Marie Combs, Piper Halliwell

Then: Doherty and Holly Marie Combs had been friends for years before the two joined up for 'Charmed.' Combs played the middle sister with the power to stop time, which eventually grew to incorporate molecular acceleration (i.e. blowing stuff up) as the seasons went on. Prior to the series, she was known best for her role in the show 'Picket Fences,' a gig she landed at the age of

Now: Aside from a really small part in Steven Soderbergh's 'Oceans 11' -- she was that woman playing poker -- she was featured in a couple TV movies before landing the role of Ella Montgomery on ABC Family's 'Pretty Little Liars.'

Alyssa Milano, Phoebe Halliwell

Then: Actress Lori Rom was originally cast in the role of Phoebe Halliwell, the youngest sister in this witchy trio with the power of premonition, but left after filming the (unaired) pilot for "personal reasons." That's when producer Aaron Spelling replaced her with his 'Melrose Place' star Alyssa Milano. The actress became, reportedly, the bane of Doherty's existence. While Milano was outspoken about their rocky relationship, sources at the time said Doherty was so fed up with her that she gave the network an ultimatum -- "it's her or me." And we know how that ended.

Now: Milano is probably the most well known of the original 'Charmed' cast. She's currently making the press rounds to promote her latest series, ABC's 'Mistresses,' but she also popped up in the movie 'New Year's Eve,' and TV shows like 'My Name Is Earl' and 'Romantically Challenged.'

Rose McGowen, Paige Matthews

Then: Once Doherty exited, 'Charmed' needed a third sister to complete the "Power of Three," so 'Jawbreaker' actress Rose McGowan was cast as the sisters' long-lost sibling, Paige Matthews, the half-white lighter (i.e. angel) half-witch love child of momma Halliwell and her white lighter. At the time, McGowan's most recognized accomplishment was dating and getting engaged to her then-hubby Marilyn Manson.

Now: Yes, that is what McGowan looks like today. Draw your own conclusions. After her 'Charmed' life came to an end, the actress picked her movie career back up with roles in Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof'; Robert Rodriguez's 'Grindhouse,' 'Machete' and 'Planet Terror'; 'Conan the Barbarian'; stints on TV series like 'Nip/Tuck,' 'Once Upon a Time' and 'Law & Order: SVU'; and more.

Brian Krause, Leo Wyatt

Then: Brian Krause went from hunky handyman/white lighter/the love of Comb's Piper to elder white lighter to mortal and back again throughout his run on 'Charmed.' Prior to that, he was seen in movies like 'An American Summer,' 'Naked Souls' with Pamela Anderson, 'Return to the Blue Lagoon' and the Stephen King-adapted 'Sleepwalkers.'

Now: Krause has since popped up in various shows, like 'The Closer,' 'Castle,' 'CSI: Miami' and 'Mad Men,' as well as a number of under-the-radar films, like 'Ashes,' 'You're So Cupid!,' 'Gabe the Cupid Dog' and other poorly titled ones.

Julian McMahon, Cole Turner

Then: Kicking off 'Charmed' season 3 was the introduction of Julian McMahon's Cole Turner, a half-demon half-human "soldier of fortune" charged by "The Source" of all evil to destroy the Charmed Ones. His character became a mainstay in the series after falling in love with Phoebe, becoming mortal, then becoming the new Source, and let's just say he had a complicated arc.

Now: After 'Charmed' got the axe, McMahon found new life as a lead on the hit series 'Nip/Tuck,' plus his role as Doctor Doom in those two horrible 'Fantastic Four' movies. You can catch him next in the upcoming DirecTV drama 'Full Circle,' which features Kate Walsh ('Private Practice'), David Boreanaz ('Angel,' 'Bones') and Minka Kelly ('Gossip Girl').

Michael Bailey Smith, Belthazor

Then: Belthazor, Cole Turner's demonic form, was portrayed by Michael Bailey Smith. In addition to playing the energy ball-hurling baddie-turned-goodie-turned-baddie, Smith also portrayed Shax, the wind demon who killed Prue, the first iteration of The Source in the season 3 finale, and he played a sight-stealing grimlock in two episodes throughout the series. At the time, he was known around the block for appearances in 'Roswell,' 'Family Matters,' 'Malcolm in the Middle,' 'Star Trek: Voyager' and many, many more.

Now: His post-'Charmed' career is just as lengthy and varied as before he boarded 'the series. 'Two and a Half Men,' 'The Hills Have Eyes,' 'Chuck,' 'Desperate Housewives' and 'Men in Black 2' are just a handful of movies and TV shows he's been featured in. Smith's latest project, 'Blood Shot,' is a horror flick that sees him tackling the vampire look which, funny enough, looks like the grimlock look.

Dorian Gregory, Darryl Morris

Then: Though Ted King's Andy Trudeau overshadowed him in 'Charmed' season 1, Dorian Gregory's Darryl became more prominent following King's departure. Darryl ended up lasting until season 7, which was fortunate for Gregory, considering his previous gigs bounced from show to show ('Moesha,' '3rd Rock From the Sun,' 'Girlfriends,' 'Lois & Clarke: The New Adventures of Superman').

Now: Gregory essentially disappeared from the spotlight, having only appeared randomly in shows like 'The Bad Girl's Guide,' 'The Bernie Mac Show' and 'Without A Trace.' His latest endeavor, 'Deceitful,' came out back in June as a straight-to-DVD release.

Ted King, Andy Trudeau

Then: Remember Andy Trudeau, the inspector in love with Shannen Doherty's Prue, from back in the day? Chris Boyd ('21 Jump Street' TV series) was originally set for the role, but, once 'Charmed' was picked up to series, he bailed for unknown reasons.

Now: You might have seen King on shows like 'Sex and the City' (he was Samantha's conquest who told her she had to shave her you know), 'Law & Order: SVU' and 'Frasier,' or how about when he became a day-time soap star on 'General Hospital' and then on 'One Life to Live'?

Kaley Cuoco, Billie Jenkins

Then: Kaley Cuoco was virtually unknown before (and during) her role as Billie, a young witch who befriended and apprenticed under the Charmed Ones, though eventually was tricked into attempting to destroy them.

Now: Of course, we all know Cuoco now as Penny, the lovable next-door neighbor and love interest to Leonard (Johnny Galecki), on CBS' hit show 'The Big Bang Theory.' She's since been known for being the new "Price Line Negotiator In Training," dating (and then very shortly after not dating) Superman himself, Henry Cavill, and contributing to the 'Big Bang''s Emmy nominations.

Greg Vaughn, Dan Gordon

Then: Who could forget good ol' pretty-boy neighbor Dan with his bevy of chest hair? He wanted so bad to be Piper Halliwell's one and only, but she had always been in love with Krause's Leo. Plus, Dan couldn't get over the fact that Piper was a witch when he eventually found out. That was a deal breaker

Now: Vaughn took the route of his co-star Ted King by becoming a soap opera stud. After making cameo appearances in 'Nash Bridges,' 'Glory Days,' 'Will & Grace' and 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,' he was featured first on 'The Young and the Restless' and then later for a longer run on 'General Hospital.' You can see him now on 'Days of Our Lives.'

Finola Hughes, Patty Halliwell

Then: Finola Hughes played Patty Halliwell, the mother of the Charmed Ones, and though her death in the story occurred even before the pilot episode, she popped up multiple times throughout 'Charmed' via time travel, flashbacks and ghostly appearances. Aside from 'L.A. Law,' 'Jack's Place,' her lengthy run as Carol on 'Blossom,' and voicing Lara in the 'Superman' animated series and made-for-TV movie, Hughes had a regular spot on 'All My Children' prior to joining.

Now: Surprise, surprise, Hughes entered the realm of day-time soap opera following her run on 'Charmed.' She's currently enjoying her run on 'General Hospital,' in which she reprised her role of Anna Devane since her first appearance on the show in

Jennifer Rhodes, Penny "Grams" Halliwell

Then: Jennifer Rhodes has appeared in more than 80 different television shows, including 'Designing Women,' 'Little House on the Prairie,' 'Fame,' 'Friends' and '3rd Rock From the Sun,' but she's known best for playing the Charmed Ones' Grams. Rhodes guest starred 14 times throughout the eight seasons, making her one of the series' guest stars with the most appearances.

Now: Following 'Charmed,' she continued racking up more TV cameos, having added 'Gilmore Girls,' 'Cold Case,' 'CSI,' 'The Mentalist' and more to her list. She'll be seen next in the film 'Lovesick,' which stars Matt LeBlanc of 'Friends' fame, Ali Carter ('Heroes'), Chevy Chase ('Community,' 'National Lampoon's Vacation') and Rachel Harris ('Diary of a Wimpy Kid').

  • High Priestess
  • Halliwell Matriarch

Occupation

  • Protecting the innocent
  • High Priestess
  • Halliwell Matriarch

Penelope "Penny" Halliwell (née Johnson), more commonly known as Grams, is the daughter of P. Baxter and Gordon Johnson. She was married four times, the most significant of which being to Allen Halliwell, with whom she had her only daughter, Patricia Halliwell. Through Patricia (Patty), Penny was the maternal grandmother of the Charmed Ones.

As a descendant of Melinda Warren, Penny inherited the power of telekinesis, and was one of the most powerful and Craft-dedicated witches of the Warren line.[1] She was also responsible for the creation of many spells and potions in the Halliwells' Book of Shadows. She raised her granddaughters after their mother's death, and became a guardian spirit of sorts to them after her own passing, providing good advice and even the occasional direct assistance when necessary.

History

Early life

Penny was born in a hotel room through a breach birth on June 23, , in Boston, Massachusetts, to her parents, Gordon Johnson and P. Baxter.[2] It was highly likely that P. Baxter had raised Penny in the magical ways before her death in December [2]

Penny married her first husband, Allen Halliwell, during in the late s, but sometime before or during her marriage, she also had an affair with a demon called The Necromancer, whom she addressed as "Armand". In , she and Allen conceived their only child, a daughter named Patricia. During Patty's Wiccaning, The Necromancer attacked, desiring to absorb the spirits of the Halliwell Matriarchs to resurrect himself, but Penny managed to banish him to the spirit realm, and held a passionate grudge against his memory ever since for this betrayal.

Though Penny acknowledged that Allen was a sweet man who truly loved her and their daughter, she also held him responsible for "leading her straight down the hippy-dippy trail", and they joined San Francisco's hippie community in the mids. As a result of this, Penny became a peace-lover, a "flower child" who was naive enough to believe that one could negotiate with evil demons and malevolent warlocks, and that every situation could be resolved by peaceful resistance. She and Allen also made plans to hold a "magical be-in" at the manor and tap into the power of the Nexus.

What Penny did not know, however, was that her best friend, Robin, was actually an evil witch who had been planning to slaughter everyone at the "be-in" with her warlock boyfriend, Nigel. On the night of the be-in, Allen walked in on Robin chanting an evil spell, and Robin killed him with a fireball. Penny flew into a rage upon seeing the carnage, and killed Robin and Nigel in short order.

Her friend's betrayal, her husband's murder, and the vanquishing all served to have a dramatic effect on her for the rest of her life. Penny transformed from a peace-loving witch into a ferocious slayer of demons and warlocks, one who practiced and honored all of her Wiccan abilities to the extent where she became reputed as one of the most powerful witches of her time. She learned how to focus her telekinetic powers, effortlessly employing them to perform great feats, and created spells and potions of her very own. She was also responsible for writing a considerable part of the Book of Shadows.

Later Life and Family

Later in life, Penny started her own coven with her closest friends and non-magical practitioners as members, including her college sorority sister, Gail Altman, who commented that she was "the most skillful witch any of them ever knew".[3]

Penny married a total of four times (starting with Allen), and was engaged for a total of six times, but the relationships did not work out, which made her extremely cynical towards men. She even placed a curse on her engagement ring so that, whenever she was tempted to enter into a serious committed relationship with a man, she will be reminded of what she hated most about unsuccessful marriages after she put it on: becoming a housewife like Martha Stewart, with no independence, or will, or even personal identity of her own.

However, she always cherished Allen's memory: had her granddaughters not convinced her otherwise when they journeyed back to the past (Witchstock), Penny would have bound her own powers after Allen's death, and she even reflected that no one would ever compare to him, which also explained why all her later relationships failed - she could never bring herself to fully move on from him. Another instance would be during Wyatt's Wiccaning, where Penny observed that the slight resemblance between Wyatt and Allen was a good thing, for the latter was "a good man".

When Patty married Victor Bennett, Penny did not allow her to take his last name, a tradition that will be followed by her granddaughters except Paige Matthews.

Penny witnessed the birth of her granddaughters: Prudence, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell, and later earned the nickname "Grams". When Patty was forced to give a warlock named Nicholas immunity to the sisters' powers, Grams had no choice but to bind the girls' powers for their protection. During this time, Penny, Patty, and the girls were visited by the future Charmed Ones who came to stop the pact from ever being made. Penny initially believed her future granddaughters to be warlocks, especially after they "kidnapped" their past selves and remained skeptical for a time even after the truth was revealed.

Once she was convinced, Penny's willing aid was invaluable—she helped unbless the ring, and even created two new spells for the Charmed Ones in the Book of Shadows: one to return them back to their time, and the other to vanquish Nicholas upon their return.

Unfortunately, Penny's first spell failed even with her and Patty casting it, for they did not have enough power. Channeling another version of the Power of Three (the pregnant-with-Phoebe Patty, young Prue, and young Piper), the Charmed Ones managed to return to their time, leaving Penny and Patty to confront Nicholas. As things progressed the same way in the future, Penny and Patty were presumably able to give him his ring back without consequence, or him being the wiser about it being unblessed.

From that moment on, Penny and Patty practiced the Craft in absolute secrecy, taking care to erase the sisters' memories of any instances where they saw magic, and telling them that the attic was sealed off whenever they inquired. Later on, when Patty's clandestine love affair with her whitelighter, Sam Wilder, resulted in the birth of a fourth daughter (Paige), Penny helped to keep it secret from everyone, and helped Patty and Sam decide that it was best to give the baby up for adoption. This was so, as during that time, the Elders regarded romances between witches and whitelighters as forbidden to a level much higher than it was during Piper's and Leo's era, and should the truth be revealed, there was a real possibility that all four sisters would be punished by being denied their powers forever.

After Patty's death in , Penny became surrogate mother to Patty's first three children, and would continually argue with Victor about how the girls should be raised. Because of their conflicting views, Victor eventually left his family, and the sisters did not see their father again for almost 20 years. Penny was essentially a single mother from then on, and was a passionately devoted guardian to her granddaughters: she vanquished all the demons that came after them during their childhood, continued to erase their memories of any magical instances for their protection, secretly cast spells to either discipline them or increase her own patience when they went overboard, and even kept Patty's spirit regularly updated about their growth.[4][5]

Sometime in the early eighties, a future version of Piper and her husband Leo and a past version of Patty approached her for help. She was so shocked that she fainted, as Patty was dead at that time, but when she learned her granddaughters actually became the Charmed Ones, she immediately offered her help. Travelling to the present with the rest of the group, she, Piper, and Patty made an impromptu Power of Three and removed the Hollow from Phoebe, Paige, Past Piper, Billie and Christy, changing the future. Later, after meeting her great-grandchildren, Future Wyatt and Chris, she traveled to Phoebe's loft and helped to make the potion that would ultimately vanquish the Triad. After a big heartwarming family reunion, she and Patty were returned to their respective times by Coop and her memory of the event is erased, despite her wish to remember.

Death

Sometime before her death, Grams was ordained as a Wiccan High Priestess, and therefore in an official legal position to perform special magical ceremonies for her family, but her heart condition also worsened. Sensing her impending demise, and feeling it was her duty to protect her granddaughters as best as she could, she created a potion to permanently relinquish their powers, for she believed that they would never be able to come together as sister witches. While telekinetically flipping the pages of the Book of Shadows for the final time in life, Penny and Patty's spirit had a minor argument: Patty argued that it was not their choice to decide the destiny of her daughters, but Penny insisted that they were not ready for such a destiny, and she did not want to put them directly in harm's way. With that, Penny broke the contact with Patty's spirit, and placed the Book of Shadows in a trunk in the attic, but before she could administer the potion, she had a heart attack and fell down the stairs, after which her granddaughters rushed to her side.[6] However, it was too late - she had passed on. Penny's death broke the spell she cast on the sisters in and began the awakening of the sister's powers, which was complete when the sisters reunited in the manor and Phoebe found the Book of Shadows and read the Dominus Trinus spell, fully awakening her and her sister's powers.

Afterlife

In late , Grams's spirit audibly spoke to each of her granddaughters, attempting to get them to combine The Power of Three into the Power of One. After the sisters succeeded at this, Grams appeared to them from the afterlife, wishing them a happy anniversary of becoming witches and revealing that it was her all along who turned the pages of the Book to help them.

A year later, Grams appears to Phoebe when her granddaughter needs advice on whether or not to give Piper her blessing to marry their whitelighter, Leo, fearing that The Elders would punish the entire family because of it. Grams tells her that while the Charmed Ones are destined for greatness, they have a right to true love as well. She knows the feeling; she was married four times and never found true love. Before she disappears, she tells Phoebe that Piper will know in her heart when the time is right. Later on, Grams, as a High Priestess prepares to bond Piper and Leo through a hand-fasting ceremony, unfortunately, Leo is taken by The Elders. Later that year, Grams successfully performs the hand-fasting ceremony for Piper and Leo.

After the death of Prue, Piper attempts to summon her sister but gets Grams instead. Grams tells her that she must move on with her life so that she must fulfill her destiny. Later on, Grams and Patty were forced to tell the girls of the existence of their half-sister, Paige.

A year later, Grams was summoned to Earth and made corporeal by Piper's unborn child, as Piper wanted Grams to help with her pregnancy. While there, Grams is eaten by the "Big Bad Wolf" while the sisters are being affected by fairy tales. It's during this time that Grams finally meets Paige. From this point on, Grams will have all further meetings with the sisters in corporeal form. Paige was hesitant to accept Penny as her grandmother, having only known one grandmother during her life. Eventually, Penny talked Paige into opening her heart and letting her into it; as she was not trying to replace any of the other family members Paige has loved or lost over the years.[7]

After the birth of Piper's child, Grams, being summoned to perform Baby Wyatt'sWiccaning, was shocked to discover that the child was a boy. Grams was adamant that no men have been or should be born in the Warren/Halliwell Family, believing that men should not be trusted with witchcraft. After some convincing, and the revelations of her past affair with a demon, Grams was able to release of some of her bitterness towards men, apologized to Piper, and accepted Wyatt into the family, summoning all of the Halliwell matriarchs to bless him in goodness.

A while later when Paige was teleported into the past after putting on a pair of Grams's old go-go boots, Piper and Phoebe summoned her to find out where Paige went. Grams sends the sisters back to "the Summer of Love," during the time when she was a flower child, right before her husband's death while in the present, she attempts to vanquish the Slime Demon along with Leo and the sisters' new whitelighter, Chris. Unfortunately, Paige accidentally changes things, affecting the future, causing the present Grams to revert to her peace-loving self. Gram then attempts talking to the slime before it engorges her. The sisters are able to convince the Penny of the '60s to fight for what she believes in and they are able to change things back to the way they're supposed to be. Chris and Leo believe that present Grams met her demise at the hands of the demon, but she turns up as her old self unscathed, reminding everyone that - as a ghost - she can't die.

A few months after the birth of Piper's second child, Chris, Paige summons Grams so that she could convince Piper to give Chris a Wiccaning. When Grams casts a spell to try and stop Wyatt and Chris' sibling rivalry, she accidentally causes the sisters to revert to their adolescent selves. After arguing with Victor on the best way to handle the situation, Patty appears from the afterlife and takes Victor's side. Angry at this, Penny pettily goes back to the Hereafter. After the situation was reversed, Penny returned, apologized to the family, and performed Chris' Wiccaning.

Grams was not happy to find out that the sisters faked their deaths and gave up the Charmed legacy without discussing it with her first. However, she advised Paige to go and seek out her new destiny.

Two years later, Grams joined the entire line of Warren witches (sans Prue) in the battle against Neena, the first witch. Afterwards, Grams and Patty were forced to lie about Prue's whereabouts, telling the girls that she had been reincarnated. Unbeknownst to the sisters, however, is that they have no idea where Prue is, asking the redemption-seeking Cole Turner to find her.

Later on, Grams and Patty were summoned by the sisters and their husbands for help regarding their situation with Prue. Grams quickly got into an argument with Leo, blaming him for Prue's absorbing the Empyreal Sword, while he threw her own screwups (such as cursing her own engagement ring) back in her face, and Piper had to break up their fight. It was revealed that Grams was also upset over her and Patty's inability to find any answers, and the more alarming thing was, while she and Patty could sense everything that their living family members did through their connection to the Halliwell line, they could not "feel" Prue anymore.

Powers and Abilities

Basic Powers
  • Spell Casting: The ability to cast spells and perform rituals. Penny was noted to be particularly skillful in this fundamental ability - during her years of raising her daughter and granddaughters, she invented spells to discipline them when they got out of hand, and was also responsible for creating many spells in the Book of Shadows.
  • Potion Brewing: The ability to brew potions. Penny was noted to be a particularly gifted potioneer, perhaps the very best one out of the Warren line—she crafted a great many potion recipes in the Book of Shadows.
  • Scrying: The ability to locate a person or object by the use of a scrying crystal, a map, and sometimes other tools.
  • Mediumship: The ability to see and commune with spirits of the dead.
Active Powers
  • Telekinesis: The ability to move objects and beings with the power of one's mind alone. Penny's telekinetic power dramatically surpassed even that of Prue's during her early years as a Charmed One—in , when the Charmed Ones visited the past, Penny mistook them for warlocks and repelled them through an intricate path out to the porch, and also used it to undo Piper's "freeze" on Andy. During Piper's and Leo's wedding, she used it to play "Pachelbel's Canon" on wind chimes, and in later instances, she was shown using it to send her opponents flying great distances with dramatic impacts, all of which testify to her formidable strength and expert skill as a potent telekinetic witch.
Other Powers
Spirit Powers
  • Wisping: As a ghost, Penny possessed the power to teleport through white-lights. This power, much like orbing, surrounded her in swirling white orbs until she vanishes and appears elsewhere.
  • Summoning: The ability to draw or transport another dead being from the afterlife.
  • Spirit Writing: Penny once wrote a message to Prue, Piper, and Phoebe on the Book of Shadows, wishing them "Happy Anniversary" on their first year as witches.
  • Invisibility: As a spirit, Penny was naturally invisible to the naked eye.
  • Intangibility: As a spirit, Penny was intangible and could pass through objects.
  • Voice Echo: Penny could project her voice to the living from the spiritual plane.

Professional Life

Nothing was revealed about Penny's professional life. However, she presumably had a job with a good income, and it was once shown that she was particularly interested in IBM stocks (That '70s Episode), which implies that she was possibly an active investor.

After she retired, she moved out of the manor into a smaller apartment in the city so that Patty and Victor Bennett could start their own family. When the couple divorced, Penny moved back in with her daughter and granddaughters. While Patty went to work, Penny looked after her granddaughters, teaching them how to cast spells and brew potions. After Patty died, it was highly likely that Penny came out of retirement as she had to raise her granddaughters and to make ends meet, though it was never revealed as to what kind of job she had.

Etymology

S1E15 Penny Portrait.jpg
  • Penelope: Name of the faithful wife in the "Odyssey," from Gk. Penelopeia, probably related to pene "thread on the bobbin." Used in English as the type of the virtuous wife () as it was in Latin.

Notes and Trivia

  • According to the Warren Family Tree Penny was born in , but this would've made her 13 when her daughter was born.
  • In "Just Harried", Penny states that Piper has to keep her last name, because all women in her family do it. However, it was later revealed that Penny herself changed her last name from Johnson to Halliwell when she married Allen Halliwell. However, she kept his name in her other marriages.
  • In the picture in "How to Make a Quilt Out of Americans", it is shown that Penny had dark hair when she was young, but in "Witchstock", she had red hair.
  • Piper states in That '70s Episode that Penny has a heart condition, which further explains the heart attack she died from.
  • Kaley Cuoco, who portrays Billie Jenkins in Charmed's eighth season, portrayed a main character in a sitcom called The Big Bang Theory named Penny.
  • Grams being born in Boston could have been a nod to the fact that during the series' original conception, the Halliwells were all roommates in Boston.
  • Penny is one of only four characters that appeared in every season of Charmed. The other three are Piper, Phoebe and Leo. Penny is the only recurring character to appear in all seasons.
  • In "Be Careful What You Witch For", it is revealed that Prue went through a rebellious stage at seventeen until her violent boyfriend attacked her, who disappeared not long after that. Piper mentioned that Grams went crazy when she found out and started to wonder if she had something to do with it.
  • Penny has appeared in the following novels: Charmed Again, Demon Doppelgangers, and House of Shards. In addition, she also appeared in the following short stories in The Warren Witches: The Crucible, Patty's Awakening, Something Old, Something New, Preconceived, and Family History.
  • Grams's counterpart in the reboot series is Marisol Vera (a combination with Patty), the mother of the Charmed Ones with the power of premonition. She was the Elder witch who raised two of her daughters while giving her firstborn away to be raised by her father.
  • Penny seemed to possess some form of Power Negation, as she was able to remove Piper's freeze on Andy when they were children while also removing Andy's memory simply by waving her hand. However, she never used it again after "That '70s Episode".

Charmed Daily: We loved seeing you as Grams (Penny Halliwell). How was playing Grams on Charmed and how would you describe Grams in 3 words?
Jennifer Rhodes: Over the years, I’ve had a lot of  roles guest starring on different shows but I have to say “Grams”  was one of my favorite characters to play.  When you have lines like, “Just because I’m dead, doesn't  mean I can’t have a life” - well it’s a lot of fun, what can I say.  Grams in three words…hmmmm….I would say OUTSPOKEN, FLAMBOYANT, MENSCH or YOUR WORSE NIGHTMARE or A REAL PISSER!

Charmed Daily: What was your favorite episode to film or favorite part of filming?
Jennifer Rhodes:   Probably “Happily Ever After” because I got to turn into the Big Bad Wolf!  Now there’s a challenge!  Also “Necromancing the Stone” because they brought in a love interest for Grams which was interesting because she had to make a decision between a man she once loved and the girls and it was a pleasure to work with Chris Sarandon.

Charmed Daily: How was working with the girls? (Holly, Shannen, Alyssa, Rose)
Jennifer Rhodes:  Everyone always asks me what it was like to work with the girls.  Do they have a bad reputation or something?  (Just kidding)  Actually, I wish I had some juicy stories to tell, but unfortunately they were all lovely women and very giving actresses to work with.

Charmed Daily: If you could change anything about Grams what would you change and why?
Jennifer Rhodes: I think if I had to do it again, I would wear a different wig every week - after all, “Variety is the spice of afterlife”.  (I made that line up, I just love it!)

Charmed Daily:  Charmed fans love you and I wanted to send you so many greetings in name of all fans. Could you please attach photo of you for fans?

Jennifer Rhodes: I thank you for the greetings from the fans.  The following is a little long but it’s from an open letter I wrote on my website to my fans in London after a convention there in , but it’s the way I feel:

But something unexpected happened to me.  I spent three days with about people who greeted me with so much, “enthusiasm”  is the only word I can think of,  particularly at the Closing Ceremonies, that I was completely overwhelmed!

As actors, we want people to appreciate our work, but I wasn’t prepared for the true affection I received.   So all I can say is “Thank you and I appreciate all of you as well. “ When I got home, it took me awhile to get over myself but my friends pointed out, it was time.

So now I’m back to my routine, but I must tell you, I will never forget the experience of meeting all of you and those very special days.

Charmed 7x3 - Grams Meets Baby Chris

Recap / Charmed S3E17 Pre-Witched

The Charmed Ones battle a warlock who gets stronger every time he's vanquished. Piper wrestles with her decision to move out of the manor.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3x17_grams.jpg

Leo and Piper are trying to be alone, and not having much luck. Piper proposes moving back to the apartment where she and Prue lived before they moved back to the manor to keep an eye on Grams. It's currently being used by friends of hers, but they promised Piper first shot at the lease when they move out. Leo is concerned that the Charmed Ones would not be at their strongest with Piper gone.

Meanwhile, a witch, Ariel, is performing a ritual when her familiar, a cat named Shadow, interrupts her. She tries the spell again and Shadow knocks several potion bottles off of a shelf. As Ariel looks on in shock, Shadow turns into a warlock and kills her.

Piper announces that she and Leo plan to move out. Prue and Phoebe are concerned about the magical implications of such a move, but Piper says that they've handled evil before when only two of them were around.

In a flashback to a time when Grams is still alive, Prue is considering moving out; her boyfriend Roger has proposed marriage. Grams is having chest pains and Piper and Prue try to encourage her to relax, which isn't easy after two policemen bring Phoebe to the door; she was caught shoplifting a pair of shoes.

In the present, Phoebe is shopping for shoes when Shadow attacks. He lifts Phoebe in the air and drops her. Phoebe runs at him and kicks him in the chest. While Shadow is trying to get up, Phoebe throws a spike-heel shoe, which catches Shadow between the eyes, apparently killing him. However, he attacks Piper while she and Leo are getting boxes to prepare for their move. Piper freezes him, then kills him with a box-cutter just as he unfreezes.

In the flashback, Grams has bought a new camera and takes a picture of the sisters, which turns out to be the picture in which the three sisters move closer together in Something Wicca This Way Comes. The sisters get in a squabble, much to Grams' annoyance.

In the present, Phoebe and Piper each mention having killed a warlock, while Prue mentions having killed one in the attic. They realize they are talking about the same warlock, Shadow. All of them think he was too easy to kill. Shadow attacks in the manor and levitates Piper again. Phoebe stabs him in the back with an umbrella, killing him again. The sisters notice that Shadow didn't really try to fight back, and wonder if he can't be vanquished.

The sisters consult the Book of Shadows, but draw a blank. Phoebe sings "I've been working on a vanquish " as a hint to Grams, who flips to a page giving instructions for a seance. Prue and Piper are skeptical, but when they close the book, Grams flips it back to the page. They summon Ariel's ghost, who tells them about Shadow. She says that familiars turn into warlocks when they betray their witches. Familiars who become warlocks in this manner must shed themselves of their former lives before the next new moon to become immortal. In Shadow's case, he wants to be killed nine times; if he fails, he will become a cat again for all eternity. She tells them that evil exists solely to spread loss.

In the flashback, Grams talks to Patty's ghost, and is concerned about the sisters' constant arguing. Patty says they'll come together when their destiny is revealed, but Grams doesn't know if they're up to it. She says that she will have to do something if she can't get the sisters to stop bickering.

In the present, Phoebe enters a darkened kitchen to find Shadow lying in wait. He attacks her, and she pushes him over the table. Suddenly, Shadow screams and dies again; it turns out he fell on a knife that Phoebe had unwittingly left on the floor.

In the flashback, Prue talks to Piper about her plans with Roger, and asks Piper to be her maid of honor at the upcoming wedding. They bump into Leo, who orbs away just after.

In the present, it's Piper who wants to move out. The sisters are hanging out at a cafe when Shadow shows up and taunts them. However, the sisters let him know that that they're on to him. Shadow pulls a knife and fatally stabs a woman, forcing the sisters to act; Piper freezes Shadow and Phoebe grabs a knife and stabs him, killing him for the sixth time. The sisters realize that Shadow will just keep killing until they kill him, which is exactly what he wants them to do. Piper tries to cook a potion to vanquish Shadow, or at least to keep busy.

In the flashback, Grams is trying to "keep her hands busy", and offers to help Piper make her favorite chocolate cake. Piper starts adding ingredients, not knowing that Grams is brewing a potion to keep the sisters' powers bound after she dies. Phoebe seems sullen, and is unwilling to join them, saying only she's going "out".

Shadow appears at the manor again. The sisters still aren't willing to kill him, but after he forces them to act by saying he'll continue to kill innocents. Prue flings a knife into him, killing him for the seventh time.

In the past, Grams consults the Book of Shadows as Patty's ghost looks on. Grams is noticeably weaker, and worried that the sisters won't be up to their responsibility as the Charmed Ones once she dies and they receive their powers. She is now convinced that they will never really come together, and decides to use the potion she brewed earlier. After Patty's ghost vanishes, Grams hides the Book of Shadows in a trunk, picks up a potion bottle, and locks the attic door behind her. She never uses the potion, however; she collapses from a massive heart attack and falls down the stairs.

Shadow attacks in the attic and the sisters kill him for the eighth time. Phoebe proposes a way to kill Shadow for good by catching him in the moment of death and magnifying it nine times.

In the past, Grams has just been buried. Piper finds the potion bottle and the sisters wonder what Grams was doing in the attic, which they believed was sealed off. They mention that they only became sisters again when Grams developed heart trouble. Piper wants to cook Grams's favorite meal, but Prue wants to spend the night with Roger, and Phoebe wants to move to New York.

In the present, Phoebe has written a spell to vanquish Shadow, Piper has brewed up a potion and Prue has a poker at the ready. Shadow bursts in through the front door, vowing to kill the sisters once he becomes immortal. Prue throws the poker at him. Just as it hits Shadow, Piper freezes him and throws the potion. The sisters speak the spell, and eight black cat silhouettes appear around him. They enter Shadow, and he warps and explodes. Piper takes the potion bottle that she had found when Grams died. Inside it, she finds the recipe for the potion that Grams was making.

The next day, Leo is loading the car, but Piper has changed her mind and now wants to stay at the manor. She tells Leo that she realizes Grams was willing to take away their powers in order to bring them together. The sisters agree to change rooms so Leo and Piper can have a larger room.

Tropes

  • Absentee Actor: Cole and Darryl.
  • Break the Cutie: Piper is show taking Grams's death the hardest.
  • Call-Forward:
    • Piper openly doubts that she'll ever find true love. She then bumps into someone on the sidewalk, and we see that it's Leo.
    • We learn how the Book of Shadows got place in that trunk and why the attic was locked.
  • Cats Are Mean: Shadow. He spends most of the episode as a human-looking warlock, but he did knowingly betray his witch while in cat form.
  • Cats Have Nine Lives: Shadow comes packed with nine lives. He needs to go through all of them by a set time in order to gain true immortality. And he gets stronger with each lost life. The sisters turn this against him in the end, though.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: Prue asks Piper to be her maid of honor. Piper didn't expect this, but Prue says it's not like she'd ask Phoebe.

Piper: So, I win be default? Gee, Prue, you really know how to flatter a girl.

  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: A big reason why Grams is prepared to prevent the sisters from getting their powers. None of them are particularly close, while Prue and Phoebe are constantly at odds (with Piper used mainly as a buffer). Phoebe even admits that the only reason any of them stayed together was because of Grams.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The sisters take Shadow down by making him feel the pain of nine lost lives at once.
  • The Only One: In regards to Grams's declining health, Piper feels she's being put in this position, as Prue is getting ready to get married and Phoebe is out of control.
  • Out-Gambitted: The sisters initially plan not to attack Shadow at all—trying to avoid him and just run out the clock. He immediately foils this plan.

Shadow: Oh, look at that. Witches think they've got this one figured out. Well, let me tell you all something [grabs a woman passing by] don't dance if you don't know the steps! [[stabs her]

  • Pun: "That was awfully catty of me."
  • Red Shirt: Shadow casually kills a random woman in front of the sisters to goad them into killing him.
  • Spanner in the Works: Grams was all set to prevent the sisters from ever getting their powers. Then she has a heart attack and falls down the stairs.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The epsiode shows the sisters six months before the start of the series right before their grandmother died.

Character Bio

Penny 'Grams' Halliwell photo

Penelope "Penny" Halliwell (née Johnson), also known as Grams, is the daughter of P. Baxter and Gordon Johnson. Penny was married four times, the most significant of which being to Allen Halliwell, with whom she had her only daughter, Patricia Halliwell. Patricia is the mother of The Charmed Ones, making Penny their grandmother.

Penny was an extremely powerful witch and one of the most devoted witches of the Warren line. As a descendant of Melinda Warren, she inherited the power of Telekinesis. She is responsible for the creation of many spells and potions in the Halliwell's Book of Shadows.

According to the family tree, Penny was born in a breach birth on June 23, , in Boston, Massachusetts, in a hotel room to her parents, Gordon Johnson and P. Baxter. Her mother died in December Early on, Penny was a peace-lover, a "flower child" who was naive enough to invent spells to "purify" evil demons and malevolent warlocks, not knowing that such spells were rather useless as some monsters are simply too dark and too evil to be converted to the side of good.

Sometime before or during her marriage to her first husband, Allen Halliwell, Penny had an affair with a demon called The Necromancer, but known to her as "Armand." Penny married Allen sometime in the late 's. Together, they had a daughter, Patricia, who was born in During Patty's wiccaning, The Necromancer attacked, desiring to absorb the spirits of the Halliwell Matriarchs, but Penny managed to banish him to the spirit realm.

In the mid's, Penny and Allen joined San Francisco's hippie community. They made plans to hold a "magical be-in" at the manor and tap into the power of the Nexus.

She learned how to focus her telekinetic powers, effortlessly employing them to perform great feats, and created spells and potions on her very own. She was responsible for adding a vast majority of the spells and potions in the Book of Shadows.

Later in life, Penny started her own coven with her closest friends and non-magical practitioners as members, including her college sorority sister, Gail, who commented that she was "the most skillful witch any of them ever knew".

Penny married a total of four times (starting with Allen), and was engaged for a total of six times, but the relationships did not work out, which made her very cynical towards men. However, she admitted that, at least, her first husband, Allen, was a good man, and their marriage might have survived if he had not died early. When Patty married Victor Bennett, Penny did not allow her to take his last name, a tradition that will be followed by her granddaughters.

Penny witnessed the birth of her granddaughters Prudence, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell, later earning the nickname 'Grams.' When Patty was forced to give a warlock named Nicholas immunity to the girls' powers, Grams had no choice but to bind the girls' powers for their protection. During this time, Penny, Patty, and the girls were visited by the future Charmed Ones who came to stop the pact from ever being made. Grams was able to write a spell to send them back to before they ever time traveled, erasing the event from her memory.

Penny was forced to keep the secret about the birth of Patty's fourth daughter Paige from everyone, because Paige was fathered by Patty's Whitelighter, Sam Wilder; and relationships between witches and Whitelighters were then still forbidden by the Elders. Penny helped Patty and Sam decide that it was best to give the baby up for adoption.

After Patty's death in , Penny became surrogate mother to Patty's first three children, and would continually argue with Victor about how the girls should be raised. Because of their conflicting views, Victor eventually left his family: the sisters did not see their father again for almost 20 years. Penny was essentially a single mother from then on.

Sometime in the early eighties, a future version (to her) of Piper and her husband Leo and a past version of Patty approached her for help. She was so shocked that she fainted, as Patty was dead at that time, but when she learned her granddaughters actually became the Charmed Ones, she immediately offered her help. Travelling to the present with the rest of the group, she, Piper and Patty made an impromptu Power of Three and removed the Hollow from Phoebe, Paige, Past Piper, Billie and Christy, changing the future. Later, after meeting her great-grandchildren, Future Wyatt and Chris, she traveled to Phoebe's loft and helped to make the potion that would ultimately vanquish the Triad. After a big heartwarming family reunion, she and Patty were returned to their times by Coop and her memory of the event is erased, despite her wish to remember.

Shortly before her death, feeling it was her duty to protect her granddaughters as best as she could, Penny created a potion to permanently relinquish her granddaughters' powers. Frustrated because she thought that the girls would never be able to come together as sisters, she believed that it was not their destiny to live the life she and her daughter Patty led: constantly battling demons and the forces of evil, and facing the many hardships they endured over the years. Whilst creating the potion, Penny and Patty's ghost had a minor argument as to whether it was the right decision or not to relinquish the sisters' powers: Patty argued that it was not their choice to decide the destiny of her daughters, but Penny was adamant, insisting that they were not ready for such a destiny, and that she did not want to put them directly in harm's way. Penny then placed the Book of Shadows in a trunk in the Attic of the Manor, but before she could administer the potion, she had a heart attack and fell down the stairs, after which her granddaughters rushed to her side.

Sometime before her death, Grams was ordained as a Wiccan High Priestess and posthumously returned to Earth to perform special ceremonies for her family.

In late , Grams' spirit audibly spoke to each of her granddaughters, attempting to get them to combine The Power of Three into the Power of One. After the sisters succeeded at this, Grams appeared to them from the afterlife, wishing them a happy anniversary of becoming witches and revealing that it was her all along who turned the pages of the Book to assist them.

Paige was hesitant to accept Penny as her grandmother, having only known one grandmother during her life. Eventually, Penny talked Paige into opening her heart and letting her into it; as she was not trying to replace any of the other family members Paige has loved or lost over the years.

After the birth of Piper's child, Grams, being summoned to perform Baby Wyatt's Wiccaning, was shocked to discover that the child was a boy.
