When I set up the new Face ID, it keeps saying move iPhone lower/higher. No matter how much I move my phone, it still won’t have any effect.

I’m using iPhone X with iOS 13.5. I’ve used Face ID for months but it suddenly can’t recognize myself this morning. When I reset the Face ID, it keeps saying “move iPhone a little lower”. What should I do now?

When Apple upgraded their lock screen security from a basic PIN to Touch ID everyone was impressed, then came Face ID.

It seemed like something from the future but nowadays, facial recognition is simpler to implement than people realize.

It isn’t flawless though, and many iPhone users are realizing this. After months of using Face ID, it may stop recognizing your face for seemingly no reason.

Even if you reset it and set it up again, the Face ID  still not working and says “move iPhone a little lower”. So, what can you do to fix this?

Part 1. Why Face ID Move iPhone a Little Lower Happens?

Seeing “Move iPhone a little lower” error could come down to either a software or hardware issue. Sometimes it’s an iOS bug and simply updating your firmware will resolve it, but it could also be due to your camera.

3Check for Update

Step 1 – Make sure that your iPhone is plugged into a power source so that it is charging, and also make sure that it is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network.

Step 1 – Use iTunes or iCloud to take a full backup of your iPhone’s data. This is an optional step, but we would recommend it.

  • iTunes. To take an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to the computer and when iTunes launches, click the device icon and select Back Up Now on the Summary page.
  • iCloud. To take an iCloud backup, launch Settings and tap your iCloud name, tap iCloud then iCloud Backup, and lastly tap Back Up Now. iphone icloud back up now

Step 2 – After your backup is taken, go to the Settings app and open General > Reset.

Step 3 – Tap on Erase All Content and Settings and to confirm you want to do a factory reset, tap Erase Now.

Note: if you forgot to take a backup then you can select Back Up Then Erase at this point.

Step 4 – Your iPhone will then begin the factory reset process. This will take up to 10 minutes so patiently wait for this to finish.

Step 5 – After that is done, you can set up your iPhone normally and restore your backup when presented with the option to do so.

Step 6 – During the iOS setup, enable Face ID and follow the steps to set it up once again.

Assuming that there was a problem with the initial Face ID setup, this will give you the chance to remove Face ID and completely start from scratch.

6Try with Other People

This next solution might seem strange, but trust us when we say it works for some people. All you have to do is try using other people’s faces to unlock your iPhone.

Sometimes when you set up Face ID the camera will recognize the face of someone in the background instead of your face, meaning that it will only unlock for them. It’s not a common occurrence but if you only recently set up Face ID for your iPhone, give this a shot.

7Return to Apple

If you’re in the rare position where none of the solutions we’ve gone over in this article has gotten you anywhere, the likely cause of Face ID not working “move iPhone a little lower” is hardware damage.

Specifically, the Face ID sensor may have failed or malfunctioned, preventing any attempt at using Face ID to work.

The Flood Illuminator can be tested by the Proximity Sensor and the Ambient Light Sensor. To test the proximity sensor, make a phone call and cover the proximity sensor with your hand; if it’s working, the screen will turn black. If you don’t know where the proximity sensor is, you can cover the entire top screen part with your palm. 

To test the Ambient Light Sensor, set the screen brightness to the highest and hold the phone in a dark room; if the brightness reduces, the Ambient Light Sensor is working fine. You can also test it by reducing the screen brightness to the lowest and then holding the phone under bright light; if the sensor is working properly, the screen brightness will increase. If Proximity Sensor and the Ambient Light Sensor are working fine, the “Face ID Not working move iPhone little lower/higher” message has nothing to do with the Flood Illuminator.

Note: To test the Ambient Light Sensor, your iPhone’s Auto-Brightness feature should be enabled. To enable the auto-brightness feature on (iOS 14), follow the steps below. 

  1. Go to Settings > scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  2. Tap on Display & Text Size.
  3. Enable Auto-Brightness using the toggle switch.

Step 2: Test the Front Camera and the Dot Projector 

Open the camera app and switch to Portrait Mode. The Dot Projector should emit a blinking red light; if there is no red light, the Dot Projector is not working properly, and it’s the reason you are getting the ”Move iPhone little lower/higher” message. 

If the Dot Projector is emitting red light, check the front camera in Portrait Mode. Face the camera, and check if it blurs the background. If there is no background blur, your front camera is probably malfunctioning, and thus you get the Face ID message.

Make Sure That You’re Facing the Truedepth Camera

Face the Truedepth camera properly, and the distance should be an arm’s length between the iPhone and your face.

Face ID will not be able to detect your face if it’s covered by something. You need to make sure your mouth, nose, and eyes are visible to the camera. Help me diagnose iPhone X Face ID move iPhone a little lower

I have yet been able to find a solution to the problem, but I have found a fairly definitive way to test for the issue.

Answer to your first question: If an LCD is changed and you do not swap the components on the LCD, Face ID will error out when you try to set it up. It will also tell you that Face ID failed to initialize when your phone first boots up.

To answer your second question there is a lengthy explanation, but I will try to keep it short.

I made a compilation of images including using the image provided by iFixit. The iPhone X flex has a proximity sensor (Red circles) and Flood Illuminator (Orange Square) - The second flood illuminator is with the camera assembly, but it won’t turn on until it starts to “record” your face.

I have found that the flood illuminator on the flex will not turn on for phones that have an issue with recognizing your face. This is where it will say “move your iphone higher, then move your iPhone lower” over and over again without ever successfully recording your face.

You can easily test this issue by using another phones camera to able to see the infared lights. Compare to the image below.

Bottom Left - Functional Face ID. You can even see two Purple dots through the LCD, so you don’t have to take apart a phone to test this issue.

Bottom Right, only the proximity sensor IR LED is working. Face ID will not work.

There are a couple companies that advertise being able to fix this problem, but it looks like a very lengthy and risky process. One company is JC Programmer. You would need to get your hands on the following…

Or the other company is QianLi in which case you would need to also get similar items. Here is a link to a tutorial video on how to do the repair. It looks pretty extensive.

This is assuming you have original parts. This will not work if the serial numbers don’t match (check with 3u tools).
