The crankcase oil vent system on the N52/N54 is one of its weakest and cheaply designed systems. We see crankcase vent issues on even stock engines but with more boost the problems are exponential. This Vargas upgraded PCV valve, and an oil catch can, are what the N54 engine needs and may alleviate most of your oil and boost leak issues. The PCV valve is supposed to let oil either return to the oil pan or pass through the intake manifold and get burned up in the combustion chamber. However, BMW used a weak plastic vent valve that doesn't seal well when under boost. Instead of  closing and venting the oil out of the intake, it's forced through this valve and into the intake and coating your valves with oil residue and carbon. Most boost equals more oil forcing its way by. This upgraded N54 PCV valve uses higher grade materials, including aluminum, to provide a better seal and prevent oil from entering the intake. It's an easy install and a must-have item when considering any turbo work. Show More Show Less

The OEM plastic PCV valve does not hold pressure well even when brand new. What this means is that when the turbochargers are making boost, pressurized air can become forced backwards through the valve and back into the crankcase. Depending on the condition of your PCV valve this can range from irritating to dangerous as a pressurized case can cause all sorts of issues. Additionally, if your valve cover is cracked due to age or has a bad gasket you are more than likely experiencing a pressure leak either internally or externally. These two features can cause even a low-mileage N54 to run like a tired elephant, sometimes even unlocking a special bonus function known as "Limp Mode". The solution is to replace any failed components and upgrade the PCV valve to something more capable withstanding the abuse of a turbocharged environment. FTP Motorsport has you covered with this solid aluminum valve assembly. It is essentially the same thing that came in your car from the factory, made out of aluminum. The internal components have also been made to fit tighter and outlast the life of an off the shelf replacement. No, this won't be the very last PCV valve you buy, but it will most certainly alleviate a lot of headaches common to N54 owners. And if you're tuned, big twin or single swapped you need one of these yesterday. Show More Show Less

The BMW N52 engine was deisgned with a crankcase vent system that relies on a heated oil separator valve to separate vapor from the liquid oil. Under ideal circumstances, the oil vapor would pass back into the intake and get burned up during normal combustion. The liquid oil would follow a path back down into the oil pan and be reused. This system is environmentally friendly but plagued with problems. The heating elements can fail or solid oil and carbon particles can block the oil separator valve. With no escape, the oil will continue to pool and collect in the valve cover or make its way into the combustion chamber leading to excessive oil consumption, blue smoke from the exhaust, idle and running issues. These issues are worse in colder climates where the freezing temperatures create a oil sludge condition that is impossible to clear. Thankfully, the CCV is replaceable on the early N52 engines (2006) and should be inspected during a major service and any time the valve cover is off. Oil can also back up into the throttle body, which is easier to check than the oil separator itself. Later N52 engines do not have a serviceable oil vent as it is integrated into the valve cover and not a separate part.

The oil separator can be replaced on its own but for a complete service we also recommend replacing the oil separator hoses and cleaning the valve cover. Any valve cover or intake manifold work should include a new oil separator valve.

What is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve all about?

The PCV Valve transfers gasses from inside the crankcase to the intake manifold where they are burned as part of the normal combustion process. Excess fumes are burned by the engine, rather than released into the atmosphere.

Keep in mind:

PCV valve failure can be caused by other engine problems. To ensure that this is not the case, a mechanic should test your engine after replacing the PCV valve, to make sure that the car runs well and doesn’t have other issues.

How it's done:

  • Disconnect the vacuum hose.
  • Remove and replace the PCV valve.
  • Replace PCV hose if appropriate.
  • Install vacuum hose.

Our recommendation:

In general, it is a good practice to replace the PCV valve during every major tune-up. Changing the engine oil and flushing the engine on a regular basis will prevent sludge build-up inside the oil pan that may cause the PCV valve to fail.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve?

  • Leaks in the engine compartment.
  • Leaks underneath the car.
  • A hissing noise from the engine.
  • Car runs poorly.

How important is this service?

As excess gas accumulates in your crankcase, the PCV valve redirects it through the intake manifold, where they are used as a normal part of your engine’s process. When the PCV valve fails, your engine won’t redirect this excess gas that it depends on. As such your vehicle will not run smoothly, and it will likely get much worse gas mileage.

BMW E46 PCV Valve Replacement – 1998-2006 3 Series – M52/54 Engine

As discussed in many of our other articles, the recurring "Achilles Heel" of BMW vehicles with the M52 and M54 6 cylinder engine is the aging of the plastic parts comprising the vehicle's intake system. As these parts start to crack and rupture from engine heat and age, they suck unmetered air into the intake system causing error codes and dashboard lights. These leaks can be extremely frustrating; some of the parts are difficult to get to, and if the system is not reassembled with care even more leaks can be created.

The PCV valve and associated crankcase breather system in your BMW is actually a fairly simple arrangement. Its sole purpose is to relieve the pressure that builds up inside your engine's crankcase by sucking out the gases, oil, and water condensation produced during engine combustion. The PCV valve's job is to separate these combustion byproducts; it channels fumes and vapors back into the intake manifold for further combustion and oil back to the lubrication system via the dipstick tube.

Cracked or damaged pipes comprising the crankcase breather system are a major cause of vacuum leaks in BMW E46 intake systems. Not only will a damaged crankcase breather system cause a rough idling engine, it may also cause a variety of warning messages in your car including the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light on the dashboard and engine code faults 2882, 2883, 2986 and 2987 on your diagnostic scanner. If you are experiencing these issues, a BMW E46 PCV valve repair including replacement of the crankcase breather system is recommended in your vehicle.

A BMW E46 PCV valve replacement is unfortunately not as easy as other models since most of the plumbing that needs to be removed is under the intake manifold. You may find other articles that show a BMW E46 PCV valve repair being executed without partially removing the intake manifold, but we highly suggest our readers stay away from these "quick fixes". Don't be intimidated by partially removing the intake manifold to do this repair. In fact, think of this as an excellent opportunity to replace your intake manifold gaskets which are also prone to failure on this vehicle. In the following BMW E46 PCV valve replacement article we give you detailed step-by-step instructions on how to do the repair yourself in your own garage.

One of the biggest repair bugs BMW owners are dealing with these days are vacuum leaks in the intake system. The intake system is a spider web of plastic and rubber parts, so pinpointing where the leak is coming from can really only be done with a smoke testing machine. A visual inspection rarely will reveal the leaking part. We know…not what you wanted to hear at this point. But before you leave our article, please consider this: a trip to the dealership or independent shop to find and fix your intake system leak will cost more than buying a decent smoke machine and doing it yourself. We guarantee you that’s a fact. So why not buy your own so you have it for future repairs? There are several “non-commercial” machines on the market that will get the job done: the Ready Smoke and the Cool Smoke being two of the more reasonably priced ones.
