If you can’t download files from the Internet, you’re in big trouble. But you already know that. Reasons for failing to download files or even folders in Windows 10 are different. We can’t tell you exactly which problem occurs in your case.

What we can do is show you as many workarounds as possible. If you already know what might cause the problem, don’t bother reading the whole article, and just look for familiar culprits.

If you don’t know what’s wrong with your browser, or system, or Internet connection, go through this article carefully, follow the instructions, and hopefully, you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Okay, this intro was a little rough, but you’re not here to read the intro. You’re here to solve your problem. So, without any further ado, check out what we’ve prepared for you below.

What can I do if I can’t download files in Windows 10?

  1. Check if external programs are downloading something
  2. Clear Internet data and cache
  3. Reinstall your browser
  4. Make sure you have enough space
  5. Verify download location
  6. Don’t use the download manager
  7. Check for viruses
  8. Disable the antivirus
  9. Disable the Firewall
  10. Run SFC and DISM scans
  11. Change the file type settings
  12. Reset the Internet Security settings
  13. Check the registry
  14. Reset your computer

1. Check if external programs are downloading something

how to automatically save files in edge

The first thing that comes to our mind when dealing with download issues in Windows is the faulty Internet connection. But since you’re reading this article, your Internet connection should be alright.

On the other hand, there may be something that’s blocking your downloads or uses the entire bandwidth.

In most cases, that’s a download from an external program. So, before you move on to another solution, make sure you’re not downloading anything with your torrent or Steam client.

Or any other external program or app. For example, if you’re downloading a huge game on Steam, you probably won’t have enough bandwidth for other downloads.

Also, if you’re connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, it’ll be even harder. So take that into account, as well.

If you’re not downloading anything at the moment, but still can’t download a single file from Google Drive, for example, feel free to move to another workaround.

It would also help to find out whether Windows is downloading something in the background already by reading this useful guide.

2. Clear Internet data and cache

Here’s how to clear data and cache in Google Chrome (the procedure is similar to other browsers, as well):

  1. Click on the (three-dotted) menu.
  2. Open History.
  3. Choose Clear browsing data.
  4. Make sure Browsing history and cache are selected (you can also select other data, for deeper cleaning).
  5. Wait for the browser to clear data.
  6. Verify download location.

Usually, the accumulated cache is not that of a problem, but it might have some effect on your downloads. So, before reinstalling your browser, make sure to clear the Internet cache and data.

If you want to clear the auto-fill data as well, check this simple guide to learn how you can easily do it.

3. Reinstall your browser

If you’re still unable to download files from the Internet, even after clearing cache and data, maybe it’s time to reinstall your browser. So, go and delete your browser, and download and install it again. Hopefully, you’ll see some changes.

An alternative solution to this is updating your browser. So, head over to your browser‘s settings, and check for the latest version. Or you can try another browser. It’s that simple.

If you want to make sure that you completely remove any leftover files from your browser, you can use an uninstaller. Check out this list with the best uninstaller software available right now.

It’s time to change your browser? Take a look at this list with our best picks

4. Make sure you have enough space

  1. Open This PC.
  2. Right-click the system partition and open Properties.
  3. Choose Disk Cleanup.
  4. Check the boxes beside Temporary files.disk cleanup can't download files windows
  5. Confirm the selection and clean the temporary files.

You can’t download any files if you don’t have where to put them. All jokes aside, you would be surprised to know how many people actually don’t know how much storage space they have left.

So, just check if you have enough storage space for the file you want to download. If you don’t have enough space on your hard disk, consider deleting some apps you don’t use, or clear temporary and old files.

Can’t delete the temporary files? After following these easy steps, you’ll delete them like a pro.

5. Verify download location

If you don’t want to delete anything from your hard disk, the alternative solution is to simply change the download location, and move your downloads to a place with enough storage space.

The procedure slightly varies depending on the browser you’re using, but it’s quite simple on all of them. Just go to Settings, find the download location, and change it.

6. Don’t use the download manager

There are literally thousands of download managers out there. But the truth is, you don’t need one!

Back in the days when browsers weren’t as advanced as they are today, maybe this type of software had some value, but today, not so much.

Your browser will provide you with every download tool you need, and that should be more than enough.

Using a download manager can only negatively affect your downloads. So, if you have one installed on your computer, go and delete it, and use your browser for downloading files.

7. Check for viruses

We don’t have to tell you that viruses and malware can do all sorts of bad things to your computer.

The problem with downloading files is just one of them. So, open your antivirus (or Windows Defender, if you don’t have any other antivirus solution), and perform a deep scan.

If your computer is infected with some malicious software, the antivirus will remove it, and hopefully, you’ll be able to download files again.

Run a System Scan to discover potential errors

Run a PC Scan with Restoro Repair Tool to find errors causing security problems and slowdowns. After the scan is complete, the repair process will replace damaged files with fresh Windows files and components.

If you don’t have an antivirus, check out this list with the best ones available right now.

To protect your PC when downloading and browsing the Internet, we recommend using a good VPN tool. Get now Private Internet Access (on sale) and secure yourself. It protects your PC from attacks while browsing, masks your IP address, and blocks all unwanted access.

Do you want to perform a full system scan directly from Windows Defender? Find out how it’s done

8. Disable the antivirus

Temporarily turn off firewalls and any antivirus or malware prevention software

Now, let’s do the total opposite. There’s a chance your antivirus blocks certain files from downloading. So, the obvious solution, in this case, is to temporarily disable your antivirus solution.

But be careful, you should do this only if you’re one hundred percent positive that the file you’re trying to download is secure. If you’re not sure, maybe it’s a better idea to keep your antivirus on.

Your antivirus can block your Internet connection so check out this usefull guide to find out more.

9. Disable the Firewall

  1. Go to Search, type firewall, and open Windows Firewall.
  2. Click on the Turn Windows Firewall off or firewall can't download files windows
  3. Go to Turn off Windows Firewall.

Same goes for Windows’ built-in Firewall. This feature is known for blocking certain features, as well as downloads. So, you might consider switching it off. But once again, for a short period of time.

Your Windows search box is missing? Get it back in just a couple of easy steps.

If you want to check if the firewall is blocking a certain port or app, read this article to find out how you can do that easily.

10. Run SFC and DISM scans

10.1 Run an SFC scan

  1. Go to Search, type cmd, and click on Run as administrator to start Command Prompt with full privileges.
  2. In the command line type the following command and press Enter: sfc scannow can't download files windows
  3. Wait for the procedure to finish, restart your PC.

Maybe something’s wrong with your system files, and that’s what blocks you from downloading. The simplest solution, in this case, is to run the SFC scan.

If you’re not familiar with this tool, it’s Windows’ built-in problem solver that may be useful when you suspect that you have corrupted system files.

If you’re having trouble accessing Command Prompt as an admin, then you better take a closer look on this guide.

Scannow command has stopped before the process finished? Don’t worry, we’ve got an easy fix

10.2 Run a DISM scan

  1. Open Command Prompt an administrator as shown in the previous step.
  2. In the command line type the following command and press Enter:
    • dism can't download files windows
  3. The process should scan and resolve possible files corruption and fix related issues.

As we already mentioned, the SFC scan is the first troubleshooting step when you want to check the system files’ integrity. However, if SFC fails, you can always turn to DISM.

Deployment Image Servicing and Management is a great tool that should help you resolve deeper system issues, including (hopefully) problems with downloading files.

There is also the possibility that DISM can fail on Windows 10 but don’t worry because we have an expert guide on how to fix it.

11. Change the file type settings

  1. Go to Menu (the three-striped button), select Help, and go toTroubleshooting information.
  2. Under the Application Basics section, click on Open Folder.
  3. Click the Menu button, and then click Exit.
  4. Delete or rename the mimeTypes.rdf file (for example, rename it mimeTypes.rdf.old).
  5. Restart Firefox.

Note: This solution especially applies to Mozilla Firefox. There’s a chance Firefox is set to handle different types of files differently, and therefore block downloading of a certain type.

To resolve this, you should reset the file type settings to default.

12. Reset the Internet Security settings

  1. Go to Search, type Internet options, and open it from the results.
  2. Go to the Security tab, click on Internet, and go to Custom level…
  3. Scroll to Downloads, make sure that the Front download option is enabled.internet security settings can't download files windows
  4. Save the changes and restart your computer

Downloads should be enabled by default, but there’s a chance something disturbed this setting. We can’t surely tell you what’s the cause of that, but it won’t hurt to check if the settings are on point.

13. Check the registry

  1. Go to Search, type regedit, and open Registry Editor
  2. Go to the following path:
  3. Look for the Attachments subkey (If you can’t find it, create one).
  4. To create the Attachments subkey, right-click Policies, select New, then Key, and name it Attachments.
  5. Right-click Attachments, select New, then DWORD (32-bit), click on Set Value name as ScanWithAntiVirusand give it the value of 1.

After you initiate downloading of a certain file, browsers will automatically put it through the antivirus scan, with your antivirus program (if you have any).

So, as we were saying before, your antivirus may not allow the file to be downloaded, and you’ll run into a problem. The solution, in this case, is to disable the feature that forces your downloads to go through the antivirus scan.

Note: Doing this is not recommended, for safety reasons, so if you determine antivirus scans are not the cause of your problem, turn this feature back on by using the steps above.

If you can’t edit your registry, follow the steps in this dedicated guide and learn how you can do it like a pro.

Can’t access the Registry Editor? Check out this guide and solve the issue quickly

14. Reset your computer

  1. Click Start.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Open Update & Security.
  4. Choose Recovery.can't download files windows reset this pc
  5. Click on Get Started under the Reset this PC option.
  6. Choose Keep my files.
  7. After the procedure is finished, you’ll end up with a fresh copy of Windows.

Resetting your system should be your last resort, but if none of the above helped, it might be the only viable solution.

If you’re having trouble opening the Setting app, take a look at this article to solve the issue. Also, if you need more info on how to factory reset your PC, read this article and find out everything you need to know.

If resetting your PC doesn’t work, don’t worry because we have a great step-by-step guide that can also fix that problem.

That’s about it. We certainly hope at least one of these solutions helped you resolve the problem files download in Windows. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, the comments section is just below.

Thank you for your post. Microsoft updated my computer overnight several days ago and I am experiencing the same problem. Everything worked fine with Windows 8.1.  I am taking online classes. I can't download anything. I tried to download Google Chrome, then Firefox. neither would download. It's a pity too. I like the speed increase Windows 10 has added to my computer. It seems to install updates, at least one update I know of, but anything else, I get a dialog box at the bottom of the screen stating that the file can't be downloaded. I wonder how long it will take Microsoft to do updates, and I wonder if I will be able to download it? I have the "EDGE" and IE-11. They both worked before the update.

File explorer not responding windows 10/ Windows explorer not responding 12 Easy Ways to Fix

Can’t Download Anything on a Windows 10 Computer [Solved] [MiniTool Tips]

Languages: EnglishFrançais日本語

Summary :

can’t download anything

It could be awful that you can’t download anything from the Internet. Why a computer won’t download anything? There are plenty of causes and the most possible ones and their corresponding solutions are discussed in this post from MiniTool.

Failing to download files from the Internet can be ascribed to many reasons. Generally, they are:

  • Poor or busy network connection.
  • Wrong drive location in your Internet Options settings.
  • Browser’s cache accumulating.
  • Virus infection.
  • PC security protection software interference.
  • System files’ corruption.
  • File type issue on Firefox.
  • Not enough free disk space.

Based on these causes for the issue “can’t download anything Windows 10”, we draw up some solutions displayed below.

How to Fix “Can’t Download Anything”?

  1. Check if a large number of files are being downloaded.
  2. Change internet option settings.
  3. Clear your browser’s cache.
  4. Scan your computer for viruses.
  5. Temporarily disable your PC security protection software.
  6. Run SFC scan.
  7. Adjust file type settings (for Firefox users).
  8. Check your hard drive space usage.
  9. Reset your computer.

Scroll down to see how to perform these solutions step by step.

Fix 1: Check If Many Files Are Being Downloaded

Are you downloading large files like a Steam game? If you are downloading a huge game or a large program, the game or the program may use the entire bandwidth and you don’t have enough bandwidth for other downloads.

In this case, there are two choices. You can either wait for the current downloading processes to end and then download the files you need or pause these processes and download the files you need. Take one of them based on your emergency.

If there is no other downloading process, but still can’t download anything, the following cases you might be in.

Fix 2: Change Internet Option Settings

When your drive location in your Internet Options is not the system drive, it can prevent you from downloading files. How to set the drive location as the system drive on Windows 10? Refer to the following tutorial.

Step 1: Press Windows + R, input control in the Run dialogue box, and hit the Enter key.

Step 2: Once Control Panel opens, click the Network and Internet option.

Step 3: Locate the Internet Options option on the right side.

choose Internet Options

Step 4: On the Internet Properties window, click the Settings button under the General tab. Then, view the drive location under Current location.

view drive location

If the drive location is C:, you can close this window and move to the next workaround. If not, continue performing the following operations.

Step 5: Click the Move folder button under Current location and select a folder in drive C:. After selecting a folder, click the OK button to save the change.

Step 6: Restart your system and see if the issue gets solved.

If you still can’t download anything, please try resetting your internet security settings.

Step 1: Reopen the Internet Properties window.

Step 2: Switch to the Security tab, click the Internet icon, and click the Custom level… button.

click the Custom level button

Step 3: Scroll to Downloads and make sure all options are enabled.

locate Downloads on the Security Settings window

Step 4: If you make certain changes, save the changes, and then restart your computer.

Fix 5: Disable Your PC Security protection Software

There is a chance that programs on your computer like third-party antivirus, Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall block certain files from downloading. [Solved] Can't Open Downloads Folder in Windows 10

It is a common problem that some users find out that they can't open Downloads folder in Windows 10 computer, which means that they are unable to access the stuff they downloaded before. This situation will certainly bring much inconvenience, and therefore should be fixed as soon as possible.

However, resolving this problem and trying to fix can't open Downloads folder in Windows 10 error isn't easy unless you're an expert with computers. And you could waste a lot of time using ineffective methods. To save your time we've gathered 5 of the top fixes so that you can repair the Downloads folder within the shortest time.

Fix 1. Run System File Checker

The first thing to do when you see a not responding/inaccessible Downloads folder is to run the System File Checker. The purpose of this built-in Windows utility is to scan all of the system files. This scan will detect any corrupt, faulty, or missing system files that could cause issues with the Windows' functionality.

  • Step 1. Search CMD in the search bar, right-click on "Command Prompt", and click "Run as Administrator".

  • Step 2. Type in the command "DISM.exe /online cleanup-image /restorehealth", press the Enter key, and wait a second.

  • Step 3. Next, type in the command "sfc /scannow", press the Enter key, and wait. This command will take much longer to run than the previous command.

  • Step 4. Once the scan finishes, you'll be shown a message if any corrupt files were repaired. Turn off the computer and back on to finalise the repair.

Since the Downloads folder is created by the system, this command will detect if any underlying problems are affecting the folder. It also automatically repairs the folder if necessary.

Fix 2. Restore Windows System

Another fix you can try is restoring the Windows system. This will usually help fix can't open Downloads folder in Windows 10 error if the problem arose after you updated Windows. Even small updates can cause features to break and reverting to the previous version will fix anything that was broken as a result.

To use this solution, a Restore Point must be available. For some Windows updates the system will create them. However, this isn't frequent and it's ideal if users remember to create reliable Restore Points. Hopefully, there is a point available in which case, follow these steps.

  • Step 1.  In the Windows search bar, enter "System Protection" and choose "Create a Restore Point" from the search results.

  • Step 2. Confirm that you are in the "System Protection" tab, and select the C: Drive. Click on "Configure" and ensure that the "Turn on System Protection" setting is currently active. Click "Apply" then "OK".

  • Step 3. Navigate back to the System Properties window and now click the "System Restore…" button.

  • Step 4. Several restore points will be listed, select the most recent available point (presumably right before you updated).

  • Step 5. Windows will walk you through the remaining steps with on-screen instructions.

It's worth mentioning that this doesn't impact your personal files. Only system files will be restored so there's no need to worry about losing personal data from using this Windows tool.

Fix 3. Optimize the Downloads Folder for General Items

Still can't open Downloads Windows 10? The third fix we suggest trying is much simpler than the others so far. After you download any file, Windows takes the liberty of filtering it into a category – music, photos, videos, etc. Certain folders, like the Pictures folder, are automatically set to optimize files as photos.

  • Step 1. Search "This PC" and open up the This PC file explorer menu.

  • Step 2. At the top of the window, locate and right-click on "Downloads", and select "Properties".

  • Step 3. Click on the "Customize" tab and under the "Optimize this folder for" option, click the drop-down menu and choose "General items".

  • Step 4. Check the box "Also apply this template to all subfolders", press the "Apply" button, and click "OK".

It may take a few minutes for this change to be applied to the Downloads folder and all of its contents. Afterwards, check if the folder is still inaccessible.

Fix 4. Change View Settings

This next fix will come as a surprise for most users. Whenever a Windows user opens a folder, every file's preview/thumbnail within the folder will be loaded. As a result, if even just one file has a corrupt thumbnail that doesn't load properly, you could be blocked from opening Downloads.

Although this sounds like an impossible way to repair Downloads folder not working/inaccessible error in Windows 10, the solution is very easy.

  • Step 1. In the search bar, type "Folder Options" and click the "File Explorer Options" result.

  • Step 2. Go to the "View" tab and observe the "Advanced settings" section.

  • Step 3. If the setting hasn't already been turned on, enable "Always show icons, never thumbnails" by checking the box next to it.

  • Step 4. Click "Apply" and "OK", then check whether or not the problem still occurs.

Using this method will stop thumbnails from loading when you want to open the Downloads folder. Thus, if a corrupt thumbnail is at the root of the error, showing the icons instead will let you regain access to the folder.

When you can’t open Downloads folder, perhaps there are some corrupted system files. In Windows, the built-in tool – System File Checker, can be used to scan damaged system files and repair them. By performing the command sfc /scannow, you can easily solve the Downloads folder not responding issue.

Solution 2: Optimize the Downloads Folder for General Items

If you can’t open Downloads in Windows 10, one of the reasons is Automatic Folder Type Discovery that optimizes directories for specific file types automatically. That is, when making a folder and adding items to it, Windows is able to set its type to music, media, pictures, etc. based on the type of items in that folder.

But for the Download folder, the file types are random. So, Folder Discovery may be a bug since it slows down the load time of the Downloads folder.

To fix the Download folder not responding issue, you can change the type of Downloads to General Items.

Step 1: In File Explorer of Windows 10, right-click on the Downloads folder and choose Properties.

Step 2: Go to the Customize tab and choose General items from the Optimize this folder for section.

Step 3: Also, check the Also apply this template to all subfolders option.

Step 4: Click Apply and then OK.

Solution 3: Change View Settings

Sometimes Downloads won’t open or respond since the files include thumbnails that usually takes much time to load. To solve the issue, you can change its view settings: only show an icon instead of showing a thumbnail of your files.

Step 1: In File Explorer, click File > Change folder and search options.

Step 2: Under the View tab, choose the Always show icons, never thumbnails option.

Step 3: Click Apply and OK.
