Allegany County DMV ending walk-in appointments

Residents handle business at the Allegany County DMV.

BELMONT — Effective Nov. 23, the Allegany County Department of Motor Vehicles will no longer take walk-in appointments for DMV transactions.

All appointments will be booked electronically at alleganycountydmv.setmore.com.

"We will open additional blocks for appointments to try and relieve the pent-up demand for DMV transactions," announced County Clerk Rob Christman. "We will have three open stations during normal business hours. Public appointments will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m."

The moves come after a disagreement over staffing between Christman and the Board of Legislators.

Other changes at the DMV

  • Drop-off basket in the County Clerk’s office. All transactions must be in a sealed envelope.  DMV will mail you the completed transaction or receipts upon completion. Make sure you have signed all forms or renewals. DMV can only accept checks in the drop-off basket.
  • Plate returns will be a no fee transaction. Drop them off at the basket in the Clerk’s office.  Make sure you let DMV know who to send the receipt (FS6) to.
  • Dealer and mailed transactions will be processed from 3-4 p.m. Completing dealer paperwork will depend on the number of transactions and backlog.  DMV will call the dealers when the transactions have been completed. There will be no general public appointments during this time.
  • DMV appointment call center: All calls pertaining to the DMV appointment system will be answered at the County Clerk’s Office.  If you don’t have a computer to book the online appointment, DMV can assist and schedule your date and time.  When you dial (585) 268-9267 hit prompt 1 for appointment assistance.
  • DMV employees will answer all other questions.  If you dial (585) 268-9267 and hit prompt 2, you will be forwarded to a DMV employee for all questions that do not deal with appointments. DMV encourages individuals to go to the New York State DMV website at dmv.ny.gov for further information relating to DMV requirements and transactions. With the high transaction tempo at the DMV office, DMV must prioritize the customer at the window.  This may cause some issues with answering your calls.
  • DMV transactions can still be mailed: Mail your completed transactions (signed, with the proper amount tendered) and DMV will process and mail within 72 hours of receipt. The address is: Allegany County DMV, PO Box 242, 7 Court Street, Belmont, NY 14813.
