Android SDK (Special Development Kit) platform tools form a crucial part of many customization procedures. These tools are necessary as we will get the ADB and Fastboot Binary files from them.

Step 2: Enable USB Debugging

Since we will need to connect your device and PC for the process, you will have to enable USB Debugging on your device. You can either follow the above comprehensive guide or else continue with the brief explanation below.

  • To start with, go to Settings > About Phone.
  • Here, scroll to the bottom and Tap on Build Number 7 times.

  • Using USB Cables, connect your device to the PC. 
  • On your PC, go to the platform-tools folder, which you installed in step 1.
  • In this folder, type cmd in the address bar and hit the enter key. This will open the command prompt window.

Step 4: Boot your device to TWRP Recovery

Here are 3 different methods you can use to boot your device to TWRP Recovery mode –

Method 1. Boot to Recovery from Fastboot via Commands

You can follow this method as the continuation of step 3. Assuming that you have followed step 3, your device will be in Fastboot mode, and the command prompt will be open through the Platform-tools folder.

Enter the below command to enter into TWRP mode –

fastboot reboot recovery

That’s it. This is the simplest way to boot into TWRP mode through Fastboot mode. If this method didn’t work out for you, you could still follow the other two methods mentioned below.

Method 2. Boot to TWRP in A/B Partition Devices

In case you did not find the above method useful, you can try out the below one –

  • Download TWRP Recovery for your device.
  • Rename this file to twrp. The file name will now become – twrp. img
  • Move this file to the Platform-tools folder. 
  • Enter the below command in the command prompt to boot into Recovery mode from Fastboot mode

  • TWRP

  • This command will boot your device into TWRP.
  • However, if you wish to install TWRP permanently on your device, go to TWRP Main Menu> Install> Install TWRP ZIP File. 

For Non-A/B partition devices, you can use the below command to flash the file directly.

fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Method 3. Flash TWRP to Boot Partition

  • Download TWRP Recovery for your device.
  • Rename this file to twrp. The file name will now become – twrp. img
  • Move this file to the Platform-tools folder. 
  • Enter the below command in the command prompt to flash TWRP IMG file to boot partition
fastboot flash boot twrp.img
  • Enter the below command to boot your device to TWRP Recovery- 
fastboot reboot recovery
  • Move the TWRP zip file to your device.
  • In the TWRP Main menu, tap on Install and choose the TWRP zip file. Swipe right to flash the file.
  • Lastly, reboot your system using the reboot option.

Unlocking the bootloader

Note: The steps below only need to be run once per device.

Warning: Unlocking the bootloader will erase all data on your device! Before proceeding, ensure the data you would like to retain is backed up to your PC and/or your Google account, or equivalent. Please note that OEM backup solutions like Samsung and Motorola backup may not be accessible from LineageOS once installed.

  1. Enable OEM unlock in the Developer options under device Settings, if present.

  2. Connect the device to your PC via USB.
  3. On the computer, open a command prompt (on Windows) or terminal (on Linux or macOS) window, and type:

    Note: If your device is not supported by the HTCDev Bootloader Unlock website, you may be able to use an alternative bootloader unlock method like SunShine, though they only support some devices/firmwares.

  7. If the device doesn’t automatically reboot, reboot it. It should now be unlocked.
  8. Since the device resets completely, you will need to re-enable USB debugging to continue.

Installing a custom recovery using

  1. Download a custom recovery - you can download TWRP. Simply download the latest recovery file, named something like .

  2. Connect your device to your PC via USB.
  3. On the computer, open a command prompt (on Windows) or terminal (on Linux or macOS) window, and type:

  6. Now reboot into recovery to verify the installation:
    • With the device powered off, hold + until the bootloader appears, then release the buttons. Use the volume buttons to scroll to “RECOVERY” and press to select.

Installing LineageOS from recovery

  1. Build a LineageOS installation package.
    • Optionally, download an application package add-on such as Google Apps (use the architecture).
  2. If you are not in recovery, reboot into recovery:
    • With the device powered off, hold + until the bootloader appears, then release the buttons. Use the volume buttons to scroll to “RECOVERY” and press to select.
  3. Now tap Wipe.
  4. Now tap Format Data and continue with the formatting process. This will remove encryption and delete all files stored in the internal storage.
  5. Return to the previous menu and tap Advanced Wipe, then select the Cache and System partitions and then Swipe to Wipe.
  6. Sideload the LineageOS package:
    • On the device, select “Advanced”, “ADB Sideload”, then swipe to begin sideload.
    • On the host machine, sideload the package using: .

      Tip: If the process succeeds the output will stop at 47% and report . In some cases it will report which is also fine.

  7. (Optionally): If you want to install any add-ons, repeat the sideload steps above for those packages in sequence.

    Note: If you want the Google Apps add-on on your device, you must follow this step before booting into LineageOS for the first time!

  8. (Optionally): Root your device by installing LineageOS’ AddonSU, (use the package) or by using any other method you prefer.
  9. Once you have installed everything successfully, run ‘adb reboot’.

How to Flash Recovery Image Using ADB and Fastboot

Bootloader mode (Fastboot mode) allows you to do various amazing things. You can flash any partition using this mode. If you are familiar with the android stuff, these are .img that can be flashed via fastboot mode.

In some devices, you need to flash recovery image using ADB and Fastboot. Majorly this applies to the device which has Google’s stock UI such as nexus, pixel, most Motorola device, etc. You can learn what is custom recovery from our previous article is.

Here is the complete tutorial on how you can flash recovery via fastboot on your Android device.

Before taking any step further, we request you to take a backup of your Android device. This will be very useful if something goes wrong while flashing. In almost all cases, everything will work out fine.

Requirements

  1. Recovery Image.
  2. Android device drivers.
  3. ADB and Fastboot Drivers.
  4. If Bootloader is available, then it should be unlocked. Read: Unlock HTC Bootloader, Unlock Sony Bootloader.

Yes, that’s true. You can boot into any recovery of your choice on your Android phone by following this guide. No need to flash and replace the stock bootloader. Though I have tested this method on Nexus devices only but I am pretty sure that it’ll work on other phones as well. Custom recoveries give you a lot of options for performing some important tasks, like backup and restore your phone and wiping out caches.

Prerequisites

  • An unlocked bootloader – It is just a command away on Nexus devices. Google will give you very useful links depending on your device type.
  • ADB with Fastboot – Check out this link: http://www.jailbreakeye.com/android/install-adb-fastboot
  • A custom recovery image – TWRP or CWM (check the Download recovery or Download touch recovery columns)

Guide

  1. Copy the downloaded recovery image (.img file) to the folder where you have placed your ADB and Fastboot.
  2. Launch terminal (or command prompt on Windows).
  3. Navigate to the directory where you have placed the ADB, Fastboot and .img file together.
  4. Shut down your phone and reboot into boot loader. For nexus devices, simply hold volume down + power to start up the phone.
  5. Connect your phone to your computer.
  6. On terminal (or command prompt) window, write fastboot boot <img file name>, e.g. fastboot boot twrp.img.
  7. Your phone will restart and will boot into the recovery mode.

How can I reboot into recovery from fastboot?

I have a phone that is bootlooping after a power failure + battery depletion during system encryption. How it got bricked isn't important here, the trouble is that I can't get into the recovery mode. Usually turning on the phone¹ via + will enter recovery mode. I had TWRP flashed as the recovery and Lineage OS as the ROM. Now it does not respond to that keystroke.

Also generally one could boot to the system and run , but with the system not booting that is not an option. I can however use + to enter fastboot mode. I've tried reflashing the recovery image from fastboot, but it still does not respond to the key sequence. Using tries to boot to the system. How can I get into recovery mode?

¹ In my case, a Levovo K6 Note/ K53a48 (karatep), but not really relevant to this question.
