1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Series - Dependable truck.

The 1998 Chevy C1500 has been a very dependable truck for me and my family. We bought it cash and have owned it for 3 years with no major issues. It has been a tough truck and even though it is 8 cylinders I could not tell. It has plenty of pick up and go. Everyone in my family enjoys the truck. My boys are bigger in size and they have a hard time finding a vehicle they can fit comfortable in. They fit comfortably in the 1998 Chevy C1500. The only small issues we have had is the door latches and pins wearing out. This is a small issue for us considering the truck is almost 20 years old. We drive it around town all day in a southern state and even in the summer we have never had a problem with it overheating. There is plenty of space under the hood and the parts are not compacted all together. I love knowing parts are where they have been for many years. If you check the basics such as oil, water, transmission fluid, and brake fluid then you are good to go in this vehicle. Myself and my two grown boys can fit in the cab of the truck so there is also plenty of space. It may not be a showy vehicle but it is definitely a classic dependable vehicle you can pass down to your kids. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who may be short on money and needing a vehicle to get them from A to B everyday with no worries.

The only negative things about the 1998 Chevy C1500 we have experienced is the door latches and hinges. If you want to fit more than 3 people in vehicle then this would not be the one for you because it only seats 3 people in the seat. The only thing else I can think of is where the cup holders are located. They are located in front of a vent so if you are running the air or heat then it affects your drinks. It makes it kind of hard in winter to have a cold soda in the holder because it will get hot fast.

The seats are comfortable and some of the best from this year model truck. They are easily customizable with extra things such as exhaust, lift kits, and much more. Add some newer rims and nice aggressive tires and the truck will be aesthetically pleasing to all. They are not the best on gas mileage, but it still is not too bad considering the size of motor and year of the truck. It is just a few miles per gallon less compared to more modern trucks, and I believe that is saying something about how impressively well made these trucks are. Many of my friends own several vehicles just like this and they have bought them because of how impressed they are by my truck.

First on the list would be great gas mileage on the highway and just driving around town. It is a little old school with roll down windows instead of electric. It has a great feel while driving it. The motor is really quiet. I like driving a truck because I don't feel all of the little bumps in the road, like you do in some smaller vehicles. It has a pretty quick pick up when you need to go faster. For example, to pass a slower driver on a two-lane highway.

Even though it has what some would consider a small motor, a V6, it has a lot of speed. The handling is great even on some tight turns. You can pretty much fill up the tank for about $30.00 and drive it around town all week long. It is an overall great truck.

Since it is an older model vehicle, some of the parts can be a little costly to replace. Once you get over 200,000 miles on it, a few things need to be replaced, like the idler and Pittman arms. The gauges will need to be replaced as well. One of the cons is that it only has a bench seat so it only fits three people comfortably. Not good for a family of four or more.

Doyle Road, about 30 miles west of our Ann Arbor headquarters, serves up a diabolical combination of crowned tarmac, humpbacked bumps, zipperlike asphalt zits, and one-wheel sink holes that is sure to uncover any flabbiness in a car's structure, discontinuities in a suspension's damping curve, or directional independence in the steering system. That's why Doyle Road has been a part of our Ten Best car-evaluation loop for more than 15 years.

Yet at double the 35-mph speed limit, the 1998 Corvette convertible remains calm and collected. Although its suspension is pumping furiously to let the wheels maintain purchase on the wildly undulating pavement, the body remains generally level and responsive to instructions from the steering-wheel rim.

Most surprising of all, we perceive no cowl shake, no rattling body panels, not even any of the tremors deep within the body that most convertibles exhibit. In fact, the C5 convertible is as solid as any we've driven. Only the Mercedes SLK and the Porsche Boxster seem to be in the same league.

Chevrolet's engineering measurements support these perceptions. The torsional rigidity of the new convertible, with the top down, measures 21.3 hertz. (The measurement of a vehicle's natural frequency relates its structural stiffness to its weight. Higher numbers are better.) That's only two hertz down from the C5 coupes with the targa top in place and well above the 17.0-hertz rating of the admirably solid Mercedes 500SL.

Moreover, Chevy offers up a shower of statistics demonstrating how much stiffer the C5 convertible's steering column, windshield frame, and various mounting brackets are than the C4's equivalents. Because Chevrolet designed both the convertible and the coupe versions of the C5 right from the get go, this solidity was achieved without adding any structural reinforcements to the coupe.

HIGHS: Rock-solid feel, easy top operation, practical and spacious, seriously fast.

As a result, the convertible is only one pound heavier than the coupe, according to Chevy's specs. Sure enough, our test car weighed 3282 pounds, only six pounds more than the coupe we tested in the August issue. Besides the stout and efficient structure, the other major contributor to this absence of obesity is a manual top.

Although this may strike some as odd, the manual top cuts costs, saves about 15 pounds, and occupies much less trunk space than a power-operated lid. Besides, it's an excellent manual top.

To drop it, you first release the two clamps at the top of the windshield header. Then you step out of the car and partly fold back the front of the roof, an action that lifts up the rear of the top. Pressing a button on the driver's side of the hard tonneau cover releases it, letting you drop the roof down into the front of the trunk, after which you shut the tonneau over it. No unusual dexterity or strength is required, and the job takes only 18 seconds.

Top down, the C5 presents a particularly clean appearance. The hard tonneau flows into a waterfall of exterior bodywork that plunges between the seats, and there's a vestigial fairing molded into the panel behind each seat.

A few staffers thought the topless mode exaggerated the large-rump aspects of the C5's styling. Others thought that the bulges behind each headrest could also be bigger, and just about everyone agreed that some sort of shiny, gleaming exhaust pipes would enhance the rear view of the car. Still, the overall look is rather stunning.

LOWS: Bulky hind quarters, seats that are neither exceptionally supportive nor comfortable.

And the C5's expansive posterior is not without its benefits, especially since it's fitted with the first proper trunk on a Corvette since the 1962 model. Thanks to the compact manual top and the runflat tires that eliminate the need for a spare, this trunk is amazingly generous.

Among two-seaters, only the Porsche Boxster, with its top up, can equal the 11 cubic feet of luggage space offered by the C5 roadster with its top down. And with its top up, the C5 offers 14 cubic feet of trunk volume, more than any other convertible on the market.

Driven top down, as we almost always did, the C5 provides a reasonably calm passenger cocoon. Although not as placid as a 500SL with its windows up and wind blocker in place, there is no harsh buffeting or irritating howling. And the automatic volume control on the radio does a decent job of raising and lowering the systems volume to match it to the speed of the vehicle, especially when you choose the most aggressive of its three settings.

The top, although it is not particularly plush or heavily insulated, is neatly lined and incorporates a glass rear window with a defroster. However, sound levels with the top up seem only slightly higher than in the coupe (our sound-level meter couldn't hear much difference).

Some of the increase in perceived sound comes from a slight retune in the exhaust system for all 98 models. The idea was to produce less noise and more music. When you wind out the convertible with the top down in first and second gears, you can appreciate the difference, although at higher speeds, wind noise largely overwhelms the exhaust note.

Other changes for 98 models both coupes and convertibles include clips on the window frames that raise the speed at which the glass pulls away from the weatherstripping, a fuel pump that doesn't whine like a jet engine when cold, a quieter accessory drive on the engine, a shifter revised for smoother, less clunky operation, and a half-degree more caster in the front suspension to enhance steering stability.

Also recalibrated was the $1695 F45 adjustable-suspension option, with which our C5 convertible was equipped. Apparently, the F45 suspension for the 97 models was calibrated on development cars fitted with prototypes of the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS EMT tires. Unfortunately, the production tires had different properties that were not well matched with the suspension. The recalibration for the 98 models largely solves this problem, as we observed on Doyle Road.

That said, anyone with the slightest enthusiastic yearnings should save $1345 by specifying the $350 Z51 performance suspension instead of the F45 adjustable system. Despite its stiffer springs and larger anti-roll bars, the C5 incarnation of the Z51 suspension is nowhere near as punishing as the C4 Z51 was. Moreover, the Z51 (as well as the base suspension) uses a monotube, gas-pressurized shock absorber that offers more refined damping than the triple-tube design used on the F45 models. In states like Michigan with unusually jagged pavement, the superior damping pays off.

Also new for 98 is an optional set of Speedline magnesium wheels. The same sizes as the standard aluminum wheels, they save eight pounds per car in exchange for their $3000 price. For that sum, we would invest our money on aftermarket wheels instead, especially since these factory mags come with an unsanitary application of stick-on balance weights on their outer rims, several of which flew off during high-speed running.

Otherwise, the convertible performs much like the coupe, which is what you would expect given their virtually identical weights. Our example hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, which places it mid-pack among the three coupes that we've tested. The quarter-mile flashed by in 13.5 seconds at 106 mph, which is the lowest C5 trap speed we've measured, reflecting the convertibles slightly less efficient shape (the drag coefficient is 0.32 compared with 0.29 for the coupe).

Compared with the last coupe we tested, this additional drag increased our convertibles time to 150 mph by four seconds (37.6). Top speed was only 167 mph, down from the 171-to-175-mph speeds we've measured on the coupes. Still, the C5 can reach 160 mph with the top down, should your hair dryer ever fail.

THE VERDICT: An exciting sports car that's easy to live with.

Given the 98 model's refinement, the improved build quality after six months of production, and the undeniable romance of the top-down experience, most of us would gladly accept the slight haircut in top-end performance. In fact, not even the glorious ZR-1 models had as many of our staffers muttering about owning a Corvette as does this new roadster.


Counterpoint

On my squeaks-and-rattles test down North Territorial Road, the first C5 I drove was satisfactory, as good as, say, the final C4. The cockpit of the second vibrated like 100 beer-bottle caps in a tin wastebasket. Hell, its seat rocked an inch in its mounts. But this C5 — a convertible that ought to flex like rigatoni—is as tight and buttoned down as George Plimpton. Yeah, there's some wind roar above 65 mph around the B-pillars. And vision to the rear is meager, despite the glass backlight. But when I discovered that this Corvette actually confers an enclosed, lockable trunk, I became insane with joy. —John Phillips

I'm trying not to gush here, but let me count the ways I love this car. I love its throaty V-8 that provides effortless surges of thrust. I love how the suspension glides over bumps, while the drum-tight chassis registers not a quiver. I love the exquisitely simple drop top that makes a power mechanism seem like a pointless extravagance. The wheel-balancing weights might fly off at top speed, but my love for the Vette convertible remains. Any GM executive who ever suggests dumping this car again should be immediately dropped out of a 73rd-floor window of GM's new Detroit world headquarters. —Don Schroeder

I tend to think that roadsters should be small, light creatures, easily tossed from corner to corner. I still love this Vette convertible anyway. Its large and heavy, but oh, what a motor! There's no convertible-body cha-cha when you go over bumps—amazing! The top works wonderfully, except you can't operate it from the driver's seat. Although others find the styling less than pleasing, I love it. Unfortunately, the car feels floaty to me, giving a great ride, but it's not buttoned down like an M3. Switching the shocks to sport feels too harsh. The seatback release feels flimsy, too. An unfortunate oversight in an otherwise great car.—Larry Webster

Like a Rock: Why the '88-98 Chevy & GMC Pickups Are Becoming True Classics

When a vehicle becomes a classic, it usually falls into one of two categories. Rare, exclusive, unusual or popular and iconic. A Ferrari F40 will fall into that first category while a 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang will fall into the second. And, as the years go on and vehicles age, we will be welcoming new classics that represent all categories. As we head into the 2020s, the 1988-98 Chevy C/K pickup truck is on its way to becoming a classic in the popular and iconic category. Here are some reasons why.

The Sweet Spot of Pickup Trucks

The '88-'98 Chevy truck along with its GMC twin represent a perfect blend of the classic and the modern. From its just-right size to its subtle styling, the GMT400 rucks have earned a lot of fans over the decades. 

Mechanically, with the classic small block Chevy (and occasionally the classic big block) under the hood these trucks are quite simple mechanically and have held up to a lots of abuse. 

And, at the same time, they are modern enough to serve as daily drivers if you choose, with proven and inexpensive drivetrain components with near endless aftermarket potential.

An American Cultural Icon

One of the things that makes these trucks special is that they arrived at a time when the pickup began its rise to the top of American vehicle market.

If you grew up in the United States during this time, it's highly likely you knew someone who had a Chevy or GMC pickup. They were everywhere—and their simple styling has stood the test of time.

Let's not forget those memorable TV ads with Bob Seger's "Like a Rock" playing over various scenes of people working and playing with their Chevys.

A Style For Everyone

Another thing that made this generation of pickup popular both then and now was the variety of configurations you could get one in. While the large four-door truck has come to dominate today's market, back in the '90s a two-door, short bed truck was the go-to for many.

You could go 2WD or 4x4. Flareside or stepside. Long bed or short bed. Extended cab or regular. And then there were the duallies—which not only delivered serious towing capacity, but also became a style statement when dropped down on some nice wheels.

Last, but certainly not least, is the SS 454 pickup—which has remained highly desirable among enthusiasts and collectors. While its performance may be unimpressive by today's standards, the big-block powered SS is a true classic.

Being a blue-collar pickup truck, not too many Silverados and Sierras were babied by their owners, but fortunately their high production numbers mean plenty of relatively clean examples can still be found.

My classified-browsing experiences show project-worthy trucks priced well below $5,000 while super-clean examples are still well under $10,000.

In other words, they may be right at that sweet spot after they are done "aging," but before values begin to noticeably appreciate.

Endless Potential

Being anywhere between 22 and 32 years old, chances are any of these trucks you buy today is going to need some refreshing. Fortunately, there's no shortage of options when it comes to restoring or upgrading.

An LS swap is an easy job on any of these trucks and once you go that route the performance potential is undeniable. Whether you into off-roading, drag racing or even handling-upgrades it's still one of the best project platforms out there.

Whatever the case, as more vehicles from the late '80s and '90s continue to be considered legitimate classics, it's only a matter of time before the massively popular GM pickups of the era take their rightful place next to the classic trucks of earlier decades.
