Greensboro Holiday Parade
By Jennifer Kelly
The Greensboro Holiday Parade has been a downtown tradition for over 37 years. In 2000, five organizations (Downtown Greensboro, Inc., the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Greensboro Merchants Association, The Bryan Foundation, and the City of Greensboro) approached the Greensboro Jaycees with a vision to revitalize the parade, showcase our downtown area, and bring back the crowds that our City’s parade once drew. The Jaycees accepted the challenge, and with the generous sponsorship of those 5 organizations, we were successful in bringing the state’s first giant balloon parade to Greensboro on December 9, 2000. With beautiful blue skies overhead, 35,000 people came to watch as large Macy’s style balloons, professional floats, drill teams, and the area’s best high school marching bands paraded down the streets of downtown. Now the parade averages over 90,000-100,000 people annually.  Come out and enjoy the festivities!

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Celebrates A Kidsmas Miracle

‘Doing The Most Good’ Helping the Jaycees bring a KidsMas Miracle to disadvantaged children

GREENSBORO, NC(December 2018) – The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club is celebrating the Kidsmas Miracle with The Jaycees on December 8, 2018. Originating in 1865 in London, England, the Salvation Army, the second largest charity in the United Sates, championed and provided to the most needy, continuing today to adapt to the needs of the communities in order to ‘Do The Most Good’. In Greensboro, The Salvation Army has supported the community for many years, providing such services as Programs That Nurture, The Boys and Girls Club, Center of Hope, and Disaster Relief Services.

On Saturday December 8th, The Jaycees will take 30 children, selected by the Boys & Girls club based on level of need, shopping for gifts and necessities for themselves and their families. The children will have the opportunity to eat breakfast, shop and then have their pictures taken with Santa. The Event will begin on Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 8:30 am and last until 11:30 am at the New Garden Target on Highwoods Blvd. After the children have had their pictures taken with Santa and gone home, we will be gift wrapping their presents, so that “Santa” can deliver them on Christmas Day. Volunteers can sign up to shop with the children, assist the children in meeting Santa, help with the overall operations of the day-of event, and/or gift wrap.

To learn more about The Kidsmas Miracle with The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, or to volunteer with the organization or to donate, call Grace Thompson at 336.907.3635 (ext 2).

East Greensboro NOW names Greensboro Jaycees as premier sponsor of Affordable Housing Program

GREENSBORO, N.C. — East Greensboro NOW has named the Greensboro Jaycees as the premier sponsor of its Affordable Housing Program, according to a news release.

EGN released the following information:

East Greensboro NOW (EGN) is proud to name the Greensboro Jaycees as the Premier Sponsor of its Affordable Housing Program.

The Greensboro Jaycees is a young professionals’ organization that provides opportunities for servant leadership, project management, civic engagement and professional development. Their motto is “Service to humanity is the best work of life.” They are well known for service projects in the Greensboro community, supporting other community nonprofits and for bringing the popular Wyndham Golf Tournament to the city as well.

“Addressing real issues for real people is our primary focus, especially this year with all the turmoil caused by the pandemic. The pandemic has enhanced the service work that we do as an organization and our team has proven to be present for the challenge as we have supported and serviced families experiencing food insecurity to cash-based and small- business owners who are often overlooked in relief programs. Most importantly, it takes a commUNITY to serve a commUNITY”, stated Jasmine Beard, President of the Greensboro Jaycees.

Creating the right strategic partnerships is critical now more than ever to be effective in serving our community members that are most vulnerable to the pandemic.

The City of Greensboro identified “housing variety and affordability” as a priority in the GSO2040 Comprehensive Plan. The Affordable Housing Program is designed to provide quality affordable housing options in lower-wealth east Greensboro neighborhoods. Our challenge as an affordable housing developer is this: the cost to build new housing often exceeds the value of the existing housing stock in these neighborhoods. In order to overcome this challenge, EGN is partnering with donors and sponsors that will provide the “gap funding” necessary to offset the cost of new construction.

East Greensboro NOW President Mac Sims states “it’s such a rewarding feeling to facilitate our residents’ realization of home ownership.”

“Because of the generosity of funding partners, EGN can help first-time home buyers gain access to a fundamental pillar of wealth-building – owning a home. With each new home, we are able to lift the asset value in these neighborhoods.” stated Phil Barnhill, Executive Vice President.

To support helping families realize their dream of homeownership via sponsorship or donations, contact Mac Sims at (336) 275-1101 or [email protected]
