How Does Electronic Ignition Work on a Gas Grill?

There are two types of electronic ignition systems used in a gas grill. One is known as a piezo starter or a piezo ignition. The other is a battery-powered spark generator. A piezo starter has become very common for use in all gas-fired appliances as it uses no outside power source to work. They have virtually replaced the pilot light in such things as natural gas water heaters, furnaces and stoves.

A spark generator uses the voltage from a battery to generate a spark. These have also become a common source of igniting a grill. If there is no battery pack on your grill, you have a piezo electric starter. Alternatively, if there is a battery pack on your grill, you have a spark generator.

Tip

An electric ignition on a gas grill works to create a spark that interacts with the gas to light the flame for barbecuing tasty foods, such as hamburgers and hotdogs.

Turning on the Gas

The electronic ignition sets off a spark when an ignitor button is pushed. The ignition rod is placed in the gas flow that leads to the grill burners. The gas must first be turned on before the ignition button is pressed, or the grill burners will not light. Once lit, the flame is adjusted higher or lower for optimal cooking heat.

Pushing the Button

Once the gas has been turned on, the ignition must be activated to light the flame. Some electronic ignitions rely on a push button that fires the piezo electric starter. Others rely on a knob that is spring-loaded and turned all the way left or right to activate either the piezo starter or the spark generator. According to Cheap Humidors, in the case of a piezo starter, a small hammer inside of the ignitor will forcefully contact a quartz crystal.

This action causes a spark to jump off off of the ignition electrode rod onto a ground plate. When the rod is placed into a gas flow and sparks, the gas ignites. With a spark generator, the circuit is closed by either pushing a button or turning a knob. Electricity from the battery will flow through the wires and a spark or sparks will be generated between the electrode ignition rod and a ground plate.

Cleaning the Electrode

Electric starting ignition rods in grills are frequently subjected to contamination from cooking fumes, grease and food particles. If the ignition rod gets covered with contaminants, it won't spark. However, the rods can be cleaned, using rubbing alcohol on the tip of a cotton swab. Gently rub the swab over the ignitor rod tip and attempt to start the grill. You may have to clean the tip several times before the starter will work.

When to Replace Spark Generators

If the piezo electronic ignition no longer works after the ignition rod has been cleaned, the unit must be replaced. There are no user-serviceable parts on a piezo electronic ignition. Alternatively, if you have a spark generator electronic ignition that does not work, replace the batteries after cleaning the ignition rod, suggests Family Handyman. If the spark generator still does not work, the unit must be replaced.

How does a push button grill ignitor work?

In the case of a piezo starter, a small hammer inside of the ignitor will forcefully contact a quartz crystal. This action causes a spark to jump off off of the ignition electrode rod onto a ground plate. When the rod is placed into a gas flow and sparks, the gas ignites.

Similarly, you may ask, how do push button lighters work?

When the button on a Piezo electric ignitor is pressed, a spring loaded hammer strikes quartz in order to create a spark. This is the typical process used in such lighters. This creates the necessary amount of voltage to generate a spark. Piezoelectric devices are much longer lasting than devices that depend on flint.

One may also ask, how do you light a gas grill if electronic ignitor is broken? Steps to Manually Light Your Gas Grill

  1. Open the lid of your grill and find the lighting hole on the side of the grill.
  2. Once you see that, place a match in the curled end of the holder.
  3. Turn on the gas burner closest to the hole.
  4. After the first burner is lit, turn on adjacent burners to cross-light them.

Accordingly, do grill igniters have batteries?

Battery Operated. These igniters create clicking continuous sparks until the burners ignite. Battery systems will use either AAA, AA or 9 volt batteries to generate the power.

How do you test a grill igniter?

Position a hand mirror so you can see the tip of the ignitor in the middle of the collector box. Press on the ignitor button on the grill's control panel a few times, while watching the ignitor in the mirror. If you see a spark with each click, the ignitor is functioning properly.
