Hardest Halo Level on Legendary?

I am laying down Halo 2's Gravemind no doubt. Been working on the Monopolized achievement recently and am down to 12 minutes needing trimmed off my total campaign time. I'm sitting at 42 minutes for Gravemind and I'm dreading doing that mission for a 3rd time. Even with a few Skull skips in place most of my effort and downfall comes from the last couple rooms because sometimes you won't hit checkpoints after walking for 2 minutes or so and get a death and have to re-walk that time again.

Also, it's heavily unfair. Pretty much random luck, good and bad, when freeing the marines at the bottom of the lift room and then the huge brute/covy fight leaves you with little ammo afterwards only to see, oh, like 5 elites, 2 of which are stealth and 1 an ultra and another a carbine, that you gotta kill as they run through the final door. There's about 10 minutes of respawning for me there.

The 12 Most Difficult Levels In The Halo Franchise, Ranked

  1. 1 Halo 2: Gravemind.
  2. 2 Halo: Truth And Reconciliation.
  3. 3 Halo 2: Regret.
  4. 4 Halo: Two Betrayals.
  5. 5 Halo Reach: Pillar Of Autumn.
  6. 6 Halo Wars: Arcadia City.
  7. 7 Halo: Assault On The Control Room.
  8. 8 Halo 3: Cortana.

What is the hardest Halo Legendary campaign?

On paper, ODST would seem to be the hardest campaign in the entire Halo series. Instead of playing as an armor-clad Spartan, the player assumes the role of the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, a more advanced marine that can still go down easily if they’re not careful.

What’s the easiest legendary mission in Halo 3?

Halo on Halo 3 I found to be pretty easy considering you can Gravity Hammer jump and skip walking the entire way around on your way up to the control room. After you defend the door and kill Guilty Spark, it’s just the Warthog Run. Shutdown on Halo 4 has a HUUUUGE skip, making the mission much shorter than originally intended.

Which is the easiest Halo game to play?

Halo 3 is one of the easier games to complete on legendary because Bungie was able to balance the enemies to fair encounters unlike Halo 2. However, there is one frustrating type of encounter in the game that The Ark showcases best.

Which is the most difficult level in Halo 3?

Players have found methods of skipping most of this level, but those that play through it legitimately on Legendary will have an exceedingly challenging experience. Out of all of Bungie’s Halo titles, Halo 3 is arguably the most balanced campaign to beat on Legendary.

Which is easier Halo 5 or Halo 4?

Halo 5 is a much easier game than previous entries due to its enhanced movement and overall increased variety of the weapon sandbox. Taking down foes is much easier in this game, even on Legendary, but that still doesn’t excuse the level, “The Breaking.” This is an infamous level that spawns not one, not two, but three Wardens simultaneously.

Every Halo Campaign Ranked By Its Legendary Difficulty

As the gaming community waits for the arrival of Halo'snewest game, Halo Infinite, some fans are finding excuses to replay the entire Halo franchise from scratch. It's also never been easier, considering that all the games are packaged into the Master Chief Collection.

RELATED: Powerful: 15 Facts That Make The Master Chief From Halo Scary

Since they're replaying the games anyway, players are, unsurprisingly, considering playing each game through on its hardest difficulty: legendary. The campaigns are notoriously difficult on this mode, especially when playing alone (since there's no chance to be respawned or revived by your teammate, with the exception Halo 5's questionable AI companions). This is what you can expect from every legendary campaign in the franchise.

7 Halo 4

Halo 4 finally came to PC late last year, to the delight of many fans. Unfortunately, they may have been sad to discover that the campaign wasn't as challenging as they remember. It's debated among fans how difficult Halo 4 actually is; some people found it to be a bit challenging, while others found it lacking compared to other series entries. The general consensus seems to be that Halo 4 is easy but boring. It can feel like a real slog to complete when Chief runs out of ammo so easily and the Promethean Knights are sponges for bullets.

6 Halo 3: ODST

Halo 3: ODST was a spin-off of Halo: 3's massive success that starred a team of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers in lieu of the conventional super-soldier Spartans. If a ranking separates ODST from Halo 3 (occasionally they're bunched together as one game with one difficulty), Halo 3: ODST usually ranks as easier. This might be a little skewed since Halo 3 was so tough (especially due to the flood levels, to which there's no equivalent in ODST) it may have just seemed easier by comparison. Regardless, this game is generally not thought to be as daunting as the others.

5 Halo 5: Guardians

Long-time fans will remember the debate surrounding Halo 5 when it came out. Arguments about its difficulty still spin around the internet to this day. It divided fans so thoroughly largely because of how it deviated from what Halo had done in the past. While some players enjoyed a fresh experience, others didn't like the changes.

It earns a lower place on this list since it can feel more unbalanced and poorly constructed than truly difficult a lot of the time. The AI troops seem to have unbalanced armor and weapons, and players often complain that the Spartan allies are entirely unhelpful on account of their wonky movement patterns and terrible aim.

4 Halo: Reach

Halo: Reach is beloved by many fans of the series, as it featured thoroughly engaging missions and a customizable player character. It's also one of the tougher entries into the series — most players would rank its legendary campaign as among the hardest. However, the game's design mistakes plant a seed of doubt in player's minds concerning whether it's tough or just unfair. At the very least, players often complain about the game's unpredictable AI and their inability to drive a Warthog in a straight line.

3 Halo 3

Halo 3's release was one that will affect the gaming community for years to come. The franchise was put on the map among the best FPS games of all time and earned attention from even the mainstream media.

A lot of time and effort when into the game to ensure there were no mistakes on their final, polished product. Unsurprisingly, Halo 3 is widely considered to be the most balanced in the series. The legendary campaign is tough but fair.

2 Halo: Combat Evolved

Whether Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo 2 should be considered the most challenging game is up for heavy debate. It usually comes down to a player's preference and their level of tolerance for seeing the same hallway over and over and over again (which Halo: Combat Evolved was undoubtedly guilty of).

RELATED: Halo: The 10 Best Red Vs. Blue Quotes, Ranked

Like Halo 3, players praise Halo: Combat Evolved for its balanced campaign. The game pushes players to the point of irritation but never makes them feel that their task is impossible to complete. Except, perhaps, during The Library, a notoriously difficult mission that sends wave after wave of flood forms at the player(s). Cheats do exist to exploit the level and complete it much easier. But for players won't aren't aware or who want the cred of completing it honestly, The Library is a true nightmare.

1 Halo 2

Those who argue that Halo 2 is the hardest Halo game will argue that point to their grave. One user on a Halo forum likened the experience to when he'd finished basic training for the army: "I felt good, but I wouldn't do it again." And they do have a point — Halo 2's campaign is unrelentingly difficult. The Jackal snipers that appear during certain segments absolutely bear special mention as the bane of many playthroughs. Indeed, many of the enemies end up with aiming skills and reflexes that truly deserve the title of "Legendary," if not just flatly overpowered.

Top 25 HARDEST HALO Missions of All Time!

The 12 Most Difficult Levels In The Halo Franchise, Ranked

Halo is one of the most revolutionary franchises in gaming history, and shaped the FPS genre forever. It has both shown excellent design with its single-player and multiplayer offerings. It has also shown uncompromising difficulty on its higher difficulties.

RELATED: Halo: Every Game In The Master Chief Collection, Ranked Worst To Best

Indeed, the Halo franchise has some of the hardest missions in gaming – they aren't just the hardest Halo missions. Some fans have even made these levels harder by playing on Legendary with all Skulls on, which players refer to as a LASO run. If you're looking for an extra challenge before Halo Infinite, or are just wondering what the hardest Halo missions are, think about jumping into some of these levels on Legendary settings.

Updated 04/30/2021 by Erik Petrovich: The Halo series has some of the most difficult missions of all time, including missions that seem deceptively simple at first. Driving missions like The Silent Cartographer in the original Halo and its thematically-inspired sequel in the Halo 3 mission Halo can even be tough to beat, partially for the series' driving mechanics. With that in mind, this list has expanded to include even more of Halo's hardest missions.

12 Halo: The Silent Cartographer

The Silent Cartographer is the fourth mission of the original Halo. While much of the game feels easy nowadays thanks to ever-growing trends in FPS gaming, the fourth mission nonetheless throws a curveball at the player. Much of the game focuses on combat, but this sequence focuses on driving.

Driving a Warthog in the original Halo game is a much more challenging experience than in later entries to the series. It was a new way to drive in games at the time, so some jankiness is to be expected. Be prepared for a long drive around a Covenant-infested island. The player might not have total control of where they're going.

11 Halo 3: Halo

The final mission of Halo 3, Halo, is an infamous mission that killed many a first-time player over and over again. The end of the game features an extended driving sequence past a series of obstacles. These range from the floor collapsing to Wraiths to explosions going off all around the player.

The series' eponymous mission is not one of the most complex, nor is it full of challenging enemies. This mission is difficult for its randomness and unreliable environment. It takes some real finesse to make it through the entire mission without dying once.

10 Halo 5: The Breaking

Halo 5 is a much easier game than previous entries due to its enhanced movement and overall increased variety of the weapon sandbox. Taking down foes is much easier in this game, even on Legendary, but that still doesn't excuse the level, "The Breaking."

This is an infamous level that spawns not one, not two, but three Wardens simultaneously. Besides this tough encounter, players essentially go up one long hallway fighting waves of Prometheans one after the other. Even though this level can be downright frustrating at times, it is nowhere near as bad as some of the hardest Halo levels in previous games.

9 Halo 4: Midnight

While there's a case to be made for most of Halo 4's levels being the hardest of any title in the Halo series, the game's final level titled "Nightfall" is considered to be one of the most difficult in this entry. Unlike every other Halo 4 missions, "Nightfall" is fought solely against Prometheans.

Be prepared to fight dozens of Crawlers and the toughest Knights in the game for just about the entire mission. Some Knights even come equipped with Incinerator Cannons that can one-shot Chief. Players have found methods of skipping most of this level, but those that play through it legitimately on Legendary will have an exceedingly challenging experience.

8 Halo 3: Cortana

Out of all of Bungie's Halo titles, Halo 3 is arguably the most balanced campaign to beat on Legendary. Aside from the dual Scarab encounter on the "Covenant" level, the campaign is filled with fair encounters that punish players who overextend themselves. "Cortana" is the pinnacle of this difficulty.

RELATED: Halo Infinite: 10 Classic Maps We Need To See

Veteran Halo players might be surprised that this is on the list. Yet, those that haven't mastered Halo 3's mechanics will fail in this level. Players need to take the mission slow and not allow the Flood to overwhelm them. Crafty players can sneak by most of the enemies on higher difficulties, but the randomness of the Flood's AI makes this an inconsistent strategy.

7 Halo: Assault On The Control Room

Halo: Combat Evolved is no stranger to tough levels, as many games from the early days of PC gaming weren't. Many fans talk about "Truth and Reconciliation" and "The Library" as the hardest levels from the original game. Fewer people mention "Assault on the Control Room". To say this level has non-stop action is putting it lightly.

Right from the get-go, players will fight wave after wave of Covenant forces as they carve a path to the control room towards the end of the level. Rationing ammo for the Magnum and using vehicles is essential to evading and, sparingly, destroying the various Ghosts, Wraiths, and Banshees that dot the open areas of this level. On the Anniversary edition, completing this mission with all skulls on is one of the hardest Halo levels players will face.

6 Halo Wars: Arcadia City

While Halo Wars might not be a traditional Halo title, as it's an RTS instead of an FPS, it carries the same spirit and story as the main titles. Completing Halo Wars on Legendary with all Gold medals can be a daunting task. In "Arcadia City", civilians need to be escorted out of the city during a Covenant invasion.

Players must support multiple Cargo Ships as they escort civilians out of the level. Losing one of these ships is scripted, but losing a second ship is practically game-over on Legendary. A mix of good luck and excellent unit management are needed to complete this mission. Even the most skilled of Halo Warsplayers can struggle with this task due to the randomness involved in the game's AI.

5 Halo Reach: Pillar Of Autumn

Technically speaking, the Halo Reach level "Lone Wolf" is more deadly than this level, as it's impossible to survive as the player must die for the level to end. Since that seems unfair to the rest of Reach's levels, a close second to "Lone Wolf" is "Pillar of Autumn."

How can "Pillar of Autumn" top the likes of Halo 3's "Cortana"? Ammo is considerably sparse in this mission. If players don't land all of their shots, they will be forced to use the Assault Rifle towards the later stages where the Covenant will swarm the player. If players don't have a precision weapon ready for the final fight, it's sometimes worth restarting the level. On LASO, this becomes even worse.

4 Halo: Two Betrayals

Take what made "Assault on the Control Room" hard and add even more elements of danger. The end result is "Two Betrayals". This level is so determined to kill the player that most skip this level by stealing a Banshee and flying through most of the encounters.

RELATED: Halo: 10 Best Villains In The Series, Ranked

For those who decide to not use this strategy, prepare for an experience that is far harder than the level that inspired it. Rocket Launcher Flood in close-quarters are a nightmare to fight. Additionally, vehicles such as Banshees and Wraiths lie in wait. Combined with this mission's overall length, "Two Betrayals" is one of the most frustrating and difficult missions of any Halo title.

3 Halo 2: Regret

Isn't it fun getting one-shot by Sniper Jackals in Halo 2? Bungie must have thought so. Most of "Regret" involves fighting Sniper Jackals, Hunters, and swarms of Covenant forces in tight corridors with little cover. The moving gondola portions are particularly painful. It's nigh impossible to clear this level without dying at least once.

This level isn't completely unfair in its design. However, the incredible difficulty ramp-up that Legendary or LASO adds takes this level from enjoyable to downright masochistic. Being shot over and over again by snipers the player can barely see is one thing. Being killed instantly by those same snipers is another.

2 Halo: Truth And Reconciliation

That's right, a Combat Evolved level ranks higher than a Halo 2 mission. It's true that Combat Evolved's overall balance on Legendary is much better than Halo 2's. However, the former was never balanced around escort sections nor Skulls. Even just getting to the ship itself is a pain on Legendary, considering how many Golden Elites can spawn near the gravity lift to the ship.

Once inside, players need to prepare for an onslaught of Covenant protecting Keyes. Once players pick up Keyes, it's up to RNG if he stays back or charges into enemies and dies, reverting to the most recent checkpoint. In the case of "Truth and Reconciliation," adding Skulls on top of these pain points creates a level that is close to impossible.

1 Halo 2: Gravemind

Halo 2's "Gravemind" is one of the hardest halo missions for just how unfair it is on Legendary. Before the title crawl fades away in the first few seconds of the mission, there's a good chance the player is already dead. If they can survive the two Brutes in the opening, they must fight through waves of tough Covenant forces in arenas that offer little cover.

Sections of this level rely on players getting lucky with the enemy AI and getting lucky with their shots. Completing "Gravemind" on Legendary difficulty with skulls turned on is one of the most difficult accomplishments, as it's bar none one of the hardest Halo levels of all time.

The Hardest Halo Missions To Complete On Legenday Difficulty

The Halo games are known for some of the best campaigns in the first-person-shooter genre of video games. The stories are good, the mission design is excellent and the campaigns are the hardest in the genre when played on legendary difficulty. Just look at Halo 2, that game is nearly impossible to complete without exploiting the levels because an elite can kill you in four tenths of a second. This list could just be all Halo 2 levels but that wouldn’t be very fun. These ten Halo missions are the most difficult to complete on legendary difficulty across the franchise.

10. Halo 3: The Ark

Halo 3 is one of the easier games to complete on legendary because Bungie was able to balance the enemies to fair encounters unlike Halo 2. However, there is one frustrating type of encounter in the game that The Ark showcases best. Enemy vehicles completely melt you and are able to take you down in just a few seconds. Being in a vehicle also makes it hard to avoid enemy vehicle fire because you’re such a large target. The Ark utilizes vehicle gameplay more than any other level in the game and you’ll find yourself having to re-try almost every single vehicle encounter numerous times.

9. Halo 5 Guardians: The Breaking

Halo 5 has this annoying feature where promethean guns have homing bullets that change direction in the air to hit you. The Breaking exclusively features promethean enemies and gameplay is close quarters for most of the level. Avoiding enemy fire has never been a bigger challenge and you’re faced with a grueling boss fight at the end.

8. Halo 4: Midnight

Promethean knights in Halo 4 are the most unfair enemies that have ever been in a Halo game. Their random teleportation and quick shield recharge rate makes them annoying to take down. Close-range combat isn’t an option with them because they have melee attack that instantly kills you and is nearly impossible to dodge. This mission is full of them and they don’t hold back for the finale of the game.

7. Halo Reach: The Pillar of Autumn

This mission was Bungie’s goodbye to the series and they went out with a bang. Just about every single enemy encounter is in this mission. The challenge to this level is that you will face multiple high-ranking elites and they always travel in groups of three or more. These elites typically have powerful weapons, tons of shield capacity and advanced A.I. There’s no easy method to defeat them unlike most enemies in every single Halo game.

6. Halo: Combat Evolved: The Truth and Reconciliation

Every gamer knows how powerful the Halo 1 magnum is. It is your best friend in the game and should always take up one of your weapon slots. The Truth and Reconciliation is the only level in the game that doesn’t have any magnum available to use. Instead, you’re given a sniper rifle with a quite a bit of ammo. On legendary difficulty, you’ll be running low on ammo before you even get to the second half of the mission. The absence of the magnum makes the close-range encounters in the second half of the mission extremely difficult because taking down hordes of enemies with a sniper in alien corridors isn’t exactly ideal. Once you make it to the end, you have to escort Captain Keyes and he’s about as tough as a grunt.

5. Halo 3: Cortana

Speed-runners usually find this to be one of the easier levels in Halo 3 because you can skip almost every single fight if you know the tricks to the level. For those that don’t know how to speed-run, get ready for the most gross and overwhelming level in the game. Flood swarm you in every direction and ranged flood pure forms will halt your progress at every turn.

4. Halo 2: Regret

This level can be summed up in two words, jackal snipers. On legendary, jackal snipers in Halo 2 travel in packs and kill you with one shot that rarely misses. They always see you before you see them and they spawn in random locations. This level is cluttered with them and when they’re combined with the difficulty of normal enemy encounters, this level is impossible to complete without memorizing spawn locations for the jackals.

3. Halo: Combat Evolved- The Library

The most infamous Halo mission of all time is The Library. This level excels at overwhelming you with an army of flood that attacks without relent. Having success in Halo usually relies on intelligent weapon choices and utilizing cover and shields. The Library breaks the rules of Halo’s gameplay by forcing you to move constantly. Stopping for any reason during this level will probably result in your death. The Library is a grind because it’s one of the longest levels ever in a Halo game and it uses repetitive structures. It’s a test of mental endurance and player skill.

2. Halo: Combat Evolved- Two Betrayals

There is one enemy that challenges the jackal sniper in how much rage they have caused players over the years. That is the rocket flood. The rocket flood is simply a flood combat form that has a rocket launcher as its weapon. The problem with this is that the flood have no sense of self-preservation in Halo 1. They will fire at you at point blank range in tight corridors before you even realize they’re holding a rocket launcher. This level features tons of rocket flood and you will be victimized by them every time you play this mission. Don’t forget about the army of covenant that stand in between you and three main objectives of the mission either.

1. Halo 2- Gravemind

The hardest level across the entire Halo franchise sets the tone of difficulty within the first couple of seconds. As soon as the level starts, you are immediately shot at by enemies. On legendary difficulty, you are likely going to die before you even flee to the nearest piece of cover. The covenant throw everything they have at you and the introduction of the unbalanced brutes gameplay-wise make this level the hardest in the entire franchise.
