Welcome to Monday's edition of Patch PM, as we kick off what promises to be a snowy week in Rhode Island. Here's a look at today's top stories.

Opinion: Rental Assistance Is Here

The new state budget bill includes rental assistance for Rhode Islanders behind on payments.

One final thought for today: To this day, my favorite part of significant snowfall is scooping some up and making "snow cones" with maple syrup. When I was a kid, I'd pour it right onto the snow and crawl though to eat it (tasted better that way!)

Did anyone else do this? Maybe it's just a French-Canadian thing? Let me know in the comments!

Most pumpkin patches  and corn mazes usually open by mid September, some earlier! You may also like a local zombie event or Zombie Paintball!. The world's best pumpkin pie recipe is here, and the pie crust recipe is here! And we have home canning, preserving, drying and freezing directions. You can access many pumpkin and other recipes and other resources from the drop down menus at the top of the page or the site search.

Keep in mind, many farms, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and Haunted Houses are trying to cope with rapidly changing state COVID requirements: ALWAYS see their own website, Facebook page or call them before you go.

NOTE: Many of the farms are dropping their websites and switching to Facebook pages - but they don't tell anyone, including search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo or us, or redirect their website,  thus breaking all links to them. If a link is broken please click the "click here to report a broken link or blank page" so we can find the replacement link! Thanks!

After Halloween, find a Christmas tree at a local Christmas tree farm (and enjoy a bonfire, smore, hot chocolate and free hayrides, and often Santa visits! And next Spring, you'll want to take your children to a free Easter egg hunt - see our companion website to find a local Easter Egg hunt.  If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to write me!

We have three bee hives in our backyard on Hamilton Allenton road in NK and our bees forage within a 2 mile radius. Someone in that radius decided to have their yard sprayed with a pesticide that killed one of the hivessome 30, bees. Almost all are lying at the bottom of the hive, but a few "survivors" are staggering around the frames.
Pesticides may say they target ticks or mosquitos, but they kill bees, too. :( Think about that the next time some lawn company pushes products for your lawn.

Corny but fun: 8 great corn mazes worth stalking in RI

If you can put Stephen King-inspired nightmares out of your mind, traipsing along paths while avoiding dead ends carved into a corn field is an ideal way to spend a fall afternoon or, toting flashlights, a spooky night.

Across Rhode Island, farm owners begin plotting autumnal fun in spring when planting their corn fields, creating often elaborate mazes based on themes both eerie and tame. The Cucumber Hill Farm team (cucumberhillfarm.com) captured these planning stages in drone videos as plants first emerged, through summer growth and into the drying stages that signal maze time.

RI Bucket List:The best things to do this fall in the Ocean State

Frightful fun:How to visit 'Conjuring' house and other haunted RI spots

The whole family — even leashed pooches, in some cases — can get in on the fun at any of these locations:

A little girl and her dad venture inside the "Escape from Alcatraz" corn maze at Clark Farms in South Kingstown.

'Mega corn maze' in Cumberland

Adams Farm, Sumner Brown Rd., Cumberland, adamsfarmri.com, () Billing itself as the “largest pumpkin patch in Rhode Island,” Adams offers a five-acre “mega corn maze” and hay rides on weekends, as well as a hay maze, farm animal petting area and Hay Mountain. They’re open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends. Tickets are available online for general admission (starting at $7 on weekdays), or mega admission on weekends ($15).

Flashlight maze trips (BYO flashlight) come with free s’mores until 9 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets — $10 for weekday general admission, $15 on Saturday and Sunday — are available online or on site. Leashed dogs are allowed at the farm but not in the maze.

For the younger set, Clark Farms also offers a kid-friendly straw maze.

Scavenger hunts by day, frights at night in Cranston

Confreda Farms, Scituate Ave., Cranston, confredafarms.com. ()  By day, the “Rhode Island Strong” corn maze provides scavenger hunt thrills around every corner. After dark, more than 40 actors take to the cornfield and nearby paths for a spookier version called Scary Acres. The daytime maze is open weekends only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last entry at 4 p.m.); tickets are $ Scary Acres operates Friday and Saturday from 7 to p.m. and Sunday from 7 to 10 p.m.; tickets for the nighttime maze and hayride, which range from $$30, must be bought online for timed entry.

Maze tickets, available on site, are $5 for children age 6 to 11, and $12 for age 12 and up. Leashed dogs are allowed.
