McIntosh MQ does it work as a tone control?

No, This is not a tone control device ( although I am sure it would color the sound) , it is a EQ to correct and or balance the sound in any given listening room. My dad used this on his system back in the 80,s. Today he still has the same room and speakers but the EQ has been taken out, and his system never sounded better. Also, you have to hook this up with 2 sets of RCA's. Pre amps are tone controls, find the right one and it can really make your system shine, IMO.

Thank you, Matt.

I agree with you about tone controls. I am using a Klyne 6LX/P3 which I bought new in , it an excellent preamp but has no tone controls.

I was searching for an APT Holman APT1 but the ones available have been used and abused. On the other hand, I don't think that its preamp section matches the Klyne.

Cheers,

I found this one by NBS Cables at the hefty sum of $25K.

That's an interesting device. But I believe that Matt is saying due to the design and sonic signature of a preamp, the component itself acts as the tone control for the system with nothing in it's path to introduce noise. Plus, tube rolling adds to this capability.
At least that's what I believe and I don't look for tone controls on a preamp. However, in the digital domain, you can EQ transparently.

Does the MQ Environmental Equalizer, when added to any system, works like a tone control?
Sorry Matt, the answer is yes. Take a look at this article for Tone control circuit. Equalization is done by adjusting tone controls. The MQ has 3 tone controls, low, mid, high, and their specifications are listed here. The frequency used for low is lower than that of a typical bass control, and the frequency used for high is higher than that of a typical treble control, but they are still tone controls. Even a 10 band EQ is just a device with 10 tone controls at those specific frequencies.

O my bad, its a great EQ! (NOT) My point is, it's not a good fix. IMO you would do way better by adding a quality preamp to the system, then adding a unit that colors the sound + more cables.

For sale is a fully restored McIntosh MQ Environmental Equalizer in mint cosmetic condition. Please see the pictures and study them carefully. The only real cosmetic issues are a few very light marks in the wood case on the side and a stain on top. Otherwise the unit is just about flawless, especially considering it's over 45 years old! This is a very early unit, serial number 3V which puts at the th unit produced from this run (dated to mid-to-late ).

The restoration of this unit involved rebuilding the power supply with modern high performance diodes and the best power supply caps from Nichicon. All questionable solder joints were touched up in that area as well. Then all of the tantalum and electrolytics in the audio path were also upgraded. All controls were cleaned thoroughly for completely scratch free operation. All lamps were upgraded to high life, lower power warm white LEDs which look great and won't need to be changed for the life of the unit!

Next the unit was cosmetically detailed inside and out. All knobs were ultrasonically cleaned and the glass and face were detailed. The wood case was also refinished and conditioned which really helped make the wood grain pop.

The performance was verified and everything is operating flawlessly. This is the perfect companion for your vintage McIntosh speakers!

Will be packaged and shipped with full insurance using UPS.

Thoughts on the McIntosh MQ EQ

I scored a really nice Mac yesterday for re-sale and in the lot of stuff I bought was a wood cased MQ along with some water ruined McIntosh ML-1C speakers ( I have parted out the usable pieces)

In running the gear for test I noticed I kinda liked the MQ a bit. I have tried it on the over some Jensen TF-3s and now on the Scott LK over the Paragon. I have yet to run it on the big system but so far it is getting high marks. Now when I went all Mac tube and big JBL in I felt I could do away with my over priced 80s black faced EQ with a million red lights on it. I didnt think it made much of a good difference. The cool look and the different spacial sound may be whats sucking me in here but it does seem to add a bit more control.

Anyone else care to weigh in on the MQ ?

    1,
I droped a line to Roger Russell this morning. He is the designer of the Mcintosh MQ I asked about the usage of the MQ on my 2 sets of JBL's and he very kindly answered back. Posted below is his reply.

    Kurtis:

I designed the MQ to work with the unique characteristics of the ML and XR woofers. The amount of boost could overdrive the JBL speakers and may not complement the response of the JBL. However, if you play them at low levels, it should be safe.

    MQ

I use the MQ with my ML1C's and ML10C's and it does sound better with it then without it. I also once tried it with my Jubals and the L's and the sound sucked! I guess it wasn't made for JBL's I run my MC and my MX through the MQ into only Mc-speakers these days.

Feedback: I recently ordered a pair of McIntosh ML-1Cs and a MQ from your company. Both were listed as B1 condition. Andy was an absolute pleasure to talk to. I had more than a few questions/concerns and he was able to satisfy and answer all of them very professionally. He gave me a great price and and assured their safe arrival To say the gear was packed well is an understatement. Everything arrived in perfect order and all were as described by Mr ButtI would even say in better condition than I expected. The new set up sounds amazing. The work Andy did on the conditioning of these gems is above reproach. I have dealt with Andy in all of my purchases from Audio Classics and each time I have come away feeling like a respected and well treated customer. You folks at AudioClassics are top notch and so is the gear you sell. It's obvious much time and care is taken to ensure a quality product. Buying used gear is always a little unsettling because you're never sure you did the right thing until you have it in your home. Thank you to Andy and AudioClassics for a great buying experience and taking the guess work out of wondering if you are going to be getting quality gear. Best regards. B.B., VA
just a note to let you know that I received the McIntosh MQ Equalizer and am more than pleased with the unit. I think your grading system is very conservative, because the unit looks like new. J.C., MI
I am very happy with the C26 preamplifier and MQ equalizer that I purchased from you. J.A., VT.
