All -

I've finally made the difficult decision to convert my C20 into a C10. And, of course...along with this comes more questions. My questions are primarily related to specific part differences between the 2 models that would prevent me from being able to use any of the C10 parts I see in catalogs / online.

I humbly ask the experts to weigh in here:

Rear:

- I'll need to completely replace the rear axle and go from the Eaton 3/4 ton to a 12 bolt
- Trailing arms - no change? Mine have the reinforcement; hwoever, that shouldn't make a difference...right?
- Springs - must change...want to go with a lowered ride height
- am I missing anything?

Front:

This is where I'm most confused. ECE has a C20 to C10 conversion kit that I know will work. That said - After I use this, will I have different:

- A arms?
- steering linkage?
- stabilizer bar? (I have a really heavy one now)
- springs (yes, this one I know)

I appreciate the help. C10 cab perches have been ordered and paid for...the c20 cab perches will come off as soon as they arrive.

What else am I missing?

Driveshaft, maybe. You will have to measure the pinion stickout on the HO52 and the 12 bolt. I don't know if they are the same or not.

I am a little confused about the cab mounts. It sounds like you are wanting to put a C10 cab on your C20 frame. Why is it necessary to do this?

Thanks for the advice. On the cab perches...I wanted to swap my C20 style for the C10 style (same cab) so that I could shim/etc in order to get cab/bed/moulding to line up straight. the c20 uses this vulcanized rubber style (instead of doughnut style) and the rubber on mine are sagging pretty low. Since they don't remake them - I went the C10 route.

BillyDon - re: the front end and "just the spindle"...why does ECE make a special kit called the C20 to C10 conversion? There must be other parts that are different in the C20...otherwise...you could just use the C10 kit? (this is really what's confusing me)

Thank you for explaining about the cab mounts. I didn't know the C20 parts weren't being reproed.

Your question about the front end parts got me thinking about a disc brake swap I did on a C10 a few years back. I used the complete setup from a 71 C10 and swapped everything from the control arms out. However, I got into trouble on the tie rod ends because the tapered hole in the later steering arm was too big. What I ended up doing was using the center link and tie rods from a C20. This fit the later steering arms and my stock pitman arm. So I would say the tie rod ends for sure are different between a C10 and a C20.

Just for fun, I decided to look at some parts listings on Rock Auto. This is the easiest online parts lookup I have found, although I can't vouch for its accuracy. These are the parts they show to be different between C10 and C20 on a 65: Both ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm shaft kits. This means the control arms are probably different, and we know for sure that the spindles and center link are. I am not familiar with the ECE conversion kit. What new parts does it give you and what stock parts do you re-use? If it is easier, please give me a link and I will look at it.

It's true that the sandwich mounts aren't repro-ed.

They can be re-vulcanized though.

Chrysler 300's and Imperials of the 50s had special mounts that have to be re-vulcanized for any restoration, there is a small cottage industry devoted to it. They should be able to help you with the relatively simple re-vulcanization of the sandwich mounts.

Sandwich mounts WILL fail, it's just a question of when. Changing to donut mounts is MUCH more reliable and fail-safe.

Hi Again,

I called Early Classic Enterprises today and I have to give a tip of the hat to them - their technical line is AWESOME - very patient with me and I know I can be annoying.

At the end of this data collection routine, here is what I've found:

1) Rear axles are completely different. Almost any rear axle will work instead of the Eaton 3/4 ton I have now - using a 67-72 model year results in a slightly wider rear end but all width differences can be corrected with wheel offsets.

2) Trailing arms on the C20 came reinforced. I'm not sure how big a difference this is in the end...but, it doesn't make any difference from a fit/parts perspective

3) Springs were different. Many variations over the years, including heavy duty, variable rate, etc.

4) Rear Cab Perches are different - for no apparent reason. The C10 doughnut style perch is a direct bolt in replacement for the C20 style. (and - you can buy reproduction parts)

On to the Front:

5) Lower control arms are different between the two models. Upper arms are the same. Lowers can be replaced with 63-70 model years (71 and 72 will work however, the bumpstop is slightly taller on these)

6) The ECE C20 to C10 disk brake conversion is really all that's needed to go to disk in the front UNLESS:

7) You want Power steering (aftermarket) - in thi case, the pitman arm size is different...so

8) I really need all new steering linkage (pitman, idler, tie-rod, center-link). Raycow was "on the money" above.

I appreciate all the feedback and help. I guess I'm off searching for parts somewhere. Incidentally, according to ECE - lower control arm (aftermarkets) don't work well...they're slightly too long and result in too much negative camber.

<sigh> It won't be easy, but - at least it's a hobby...so, it's supposed to be fun and challenging.

That puzzles me too. Why is there a special spindle for C20 to C10 conversion? Others know more than I about the vagaries of the C20 (Vaughn, you there?)- but I assume it's the uniqueness of the C20 balljoints and/or tie rod ends. If it were me, I think I would just swap to 73-87 C-10 balljoints/spindle and be done with it. I'm pretty sure your C20 control arms are not different than C10 arms...but put that question out to the C20 devotees and see what they say. Again... there may be something I'm missing here.

In a pinch, if nothing else works, you could call and just ask ECE what's up with that... Let us know.

I've never really tried the c20 to c10 conversion, so I'm not sure if the c20 has different ball joints or not. I do know that the 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton (2wd only) frames are exactly the same, and the trailing arms are the same (except for the reinforcing plate) on these models (the axles are of course different, but have the same style of perch). Of course, the springs would be heavier back and front. I assume that the upper and lower A-arms MIGHT be the same, since everything else on the frame is the same. It may just be as simple as replacing the ball joints to go with the 1/2 ton spindle.

I talked with a guy here locally that did a disk swap in a 69 - from the 3/4 ton drum to the 1/2 ton disk, he said it was just a ball joint swap plus the spindle.

As far as the tie rods go, yes I believe the diameter of the outer tie rods are different. If I remember right, the new outer tie rod doesn't thread into the old tie rod sleeve, it requires a special tie rod sleeve - CPP carries conversion tie rod sleeves. I could be confusing this with the later 73-87 stuff, so it's something you should double check before shelling out money.

The '64-'66 3/4-ton upper ball joints carry a different part number than the 1/2-ton units (although the '64-'66 3/4-t upper joints are the same as the '60-'62 1/2-t upper ball joints).

The Lower '64-'66 ball show a different part number for 1/2-t and 3/4-t.

I have no clue what the differences between the two are, but they do carry different part numbers....

between weight classification one should see quite a few little differences in support of larger GVW"s; larger wheel- axle brgs , strg; wherever there amy be greater stress; there may be greater stress on lower b/joints so they may be larger than the top ones. if it was supplied wit k/pins they would be larger on 3/4 than !/2 t; same as supension as there may be more spring and if sprung one should see larger pins and bushings on the ends but more than likely not the frame unless it is a 4x4.
there will be quite a few little subtle differences

I am in the process of doing this same conversion on my 65 c20 long bed. the donor truck is a 1980 chevy short bed c10. here is some of the stuff that I have had to work through so far in this conversion:

upper "A" arms same but different ball joints
lower "a" arms different as well as the ball joints
springs are different.
tie rod end are different and center link (too big for c10 parts)
rear end is the easiest part of this conversion. I used the 12 bolt from the 80 chevy by cutting the leaf spring perches off and using the rear end conversion kit offered by many venders for $130. it come with new axle perches adjustable panhard bar, panhard bar mount for diff and bushings.
as far as lowering the rear end you can use coil springs designed for lowering or block it but once I got to about 4 inches of lowering I noticed it was time for a "c" notch in the frame for clearance issues. my c20 had an eaton full float rear end with 456 gears. when going to the 12 bolt rear end, drive line modifications ARE required!
I reused my upper a arms and used the c10 ball joints (upper and lower), springs, lower a arms, spindles steering linkage and used the front brake lines and proportioning valve. the brake booster and master cylinder came from a 72 c10. you will run into issues with the brake peddle rod being too short so make sure you get the right one! you will also have to hook some kind of manifold vacuum to the brake booster so remember big cams are not known for giving much vac. you may need some kind of vacuum reserve tank. when installig the lower a arms from the c10 you will want to se the c10 shafts and bushings as they are different from the c20's hope this helps some let me know if you have any more questions.

Bill Newell’s 1972 Chevy C20 longbed converted to 1969 C10 shortbed

There are no two ways about it; there's a cultural divide a mile wide between people who love classic trucks that lay hard, and the people who don't.

Bill Newell of Medford, Oregon, just happens to be one of those people who likes his classic trucks a little on the lowered side, and that's where it all started for this 1972 Chevy C20.

By day Bill works for Crater Lake Ford in Medford as a suspension technician. The first time he spotted the 3/4-ton Chevy longbed it was in the dealership's wholesale line ready for whatever ill fate awaited it. That meant it could have been on its way to the metal scrapper, or piled in a stack at a local wrecking yard and parted out.

Bill told us that ever since 1992 when he owned a 1970 Chevy C10 panel truck he loved that body style and looked into saving the 1972 from an unknown fate. After a line of persistent inquiry the Ford dealer sold the C20 to Bill for $500 and he didn't waste any time getting the 58,000-original mile truck home. For eight days Bill drove the C20 as a stock truck, but on the ninth day he stripped the C20 longbed down to the bare frame and commenced to change it into a C10 shortbed.

When Bill was asked how long it took him to build the truck he said it was done in two stages. "The first stage was shortening the frame and fabricating the suspension, body-dropping the cab and bed, and then completing the engine and transmission swap."

The front fenders, hood, cab, and bed were lifted off, and then Bill went to work shortening the heavier-duty 3/4-ton frame to match up with the shorter 114-inch wheelbase of a 1/2-ton shortbed. In front Bill made a deal with Lonnie Thompson of Carolina Kustoms in Portland, Oregon, to swap his Toyota Tacoma, plus an undisclosed amount of cash on top in trade for a Porterbuilt Dropmember.

Bill added KP Components narrowed tubular double A-arms and Classic Performance Products narrowed track spindles. This addition narrowed the track skinny enough to aid clearing larger-diameter 20-inch Coys-style C-33 wheels and 245/45-20 Toyo tires to tuck further up into the fenderwells.

In lieu of conventional coil springs, Slam Specialties SS7 airbags are in place at all four corners. Air ride management is handled via an AccuAir e-Level controller adjusting ride height from a slammed stance to driving height, and dual Air Zenith compressors to pump air supply to twin Air Zenith receivers (air tanks). Steering comes from a 1991 Ford Mustang rack-and-pinion.

There's not a lot of work performed on Bill's truck that he didn't do by himself, or with the help of his wife, Michelle, Brian McCullough, or Daniel Hill. In past builds Bill did all of the suspension and mechanical work, but had never attempted the bodywork and paint. This time around things were different. After driving his shortened Fleetside for about a year in primer and original green color Bill tore into the bodywork and paint.

Every bit of grinding, pounding panels, and primering took place in Bill's two-car garage, but McCullough offered the use of his new three-car garage for Bill to use as a paint booth. On went a slick coating of Pro Spray Kia Soul Green Tea Latte paint, and no one would have ever guessed this was Bill's first time behind a spray gun. That says a lot about the ease of using Pro Spray paint.

Inside the cab Bill installed Vintage Air A/C and Dynamat on the floor and cab walls to keep the noise out and cold air inside. Bob Harm of Harm's Upholstery laid black loop carpet and reupholstered a pair of 2003 Tahoe bucket seats with a 2003 Silverado center console in between.

There are a few things that Bill discovered about his truck that have proved to be an interesting study of human nature, and it's that people love to argue his truck is a 1969 because that's the year of its grille, and some say he ruined a perfectly good stock truck not knowing it was ready for the scrap heap when he saved it. But then on the bright side there are the more enlightened individuals who understand it's Bill's truck so he could do whatever he wanted with it.

Need advice - C20 to C10 conversion

Been searching for 8 lug wheels for a while and have realized they are not easy to find in the 16x6-1/2 style. I have been told by a friend that I should consider converting to disc brakes up front and getting 5 or 6 lug wheels. In addition, I am probably going to change out the rear end so I have a taller gear. The truck as it sits is a 1963 C20, 292, 4speed on the floor, posi rear end, probably geared really low.

So, if I convert the rear end to a higher gear, will it be 5 or 6 lug? What is the best high gear rear end to look for? I would like to match the front disc brakes to match the rear end, as far as 5 or 6 lug.

Hoping all this makes sense. And, I would probably want to drop the truck about 2-3 inches, just to get a cooler look.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. I hate to throw money into 8-lug wheels if I'm better off converting to disc brakes and going 5 or 6 lug. Hopefully, it will be easier to get 5 or 6 lug wheels.

Your 63 C-20 is a heavy duty truck with a heavy duty frame, front suspension, engine, transmission, and a 4.57:1 HD rear end. You just don't change all this stuff without serious work and associated cost. Even if you can find a donor C-10 to provide the parts most of them will need to be rebuilt anyway. After all the replacements are 50+ years old also. Find a 4.10 rear end, there are numerous posts about this issue. I believe there are 8 lug disc brake conversions available now. Check with ABS in Orange. There are aftermarket suppliers that can provide 8 lug wheels. Wheelsmith is in Corona. I'm sure there are others locally.
Otherwise sell it and find a C-10 you love and spend the cash on it.

Ditto to rfs56trk. Depends what are going todo with your truck? A ¾ ton truck might be to much in some cases. But id rather have bigger brakes, suspension etc. A half ton truck might be plenty for ya tho. Sell the 20 and buy the 10 if it soots ya better. Good luck. But remember, its your truck, do what you see fit.

I switched my c20 over to half ton stuff,found donor rear out out of 63 c10,and then did c20 to c10 conversion spindles with disc brakes up front...as far as wheels for 8 lug you could always find ford van wheels from junk yard or gm steel wheels

I see GM and Ford 8 lug wheels on classified adds every day, unless they have changed the pattern you should have a big variety to choose from.

I've been driving a 62 c30 for about 5 years at an average of 5,000 miles a year at all kinds of speeds and never had a problem with the original drum brakes loaded on mountain roads and on wet roads always stops straight and true . I check the adjustment at the beginning of every season and then motor on .
Lots of steel wheels to be had for your truck just check for offset , there are some differences .

I have a 65 C10 that I converted to disc brakes, 5 lug wheels, and installed a 3.08 rear end out of a 97 suburban. Couple of things to consider....

The disc brake conversion will most likely give you a wider stance by an inch or two as it pushes the wheels out. You'd have to find a rear end that would match this spacing unless you want the truck to look funny going down the road.

Also, consider a disc brake conversion may or may not match the wheel lug spacing. I bought my disc conversion and my rear axle before I realized the discs were 5x4-1/2 and the rear axle was 5x5.

You're trying to make changes you think will make your life easier but it could also be a huge pain in the rear in the long run

8 lug steel wheels for trailers are available by the thousands in several styles of centers, including the wide spoke "wagon wheels" that some people like. Those wheels are designed to carry heavier loads than most pickups will ever see, even though the Department of Transportation classifies them as "trailer only" for some silly reason.

I owned a 66 C-20 for 17 years and drove to work everyday. Also used it with a camper and went everywhere. The first thing I did was replace the 3 speed with a 3 speed overdrive. I later replaced the 292 with a 327 and installed power steering and a brake booster with a dual MC. There are many more options available today but it was more than adequate for the time.

As said, 8 lug wheels are available. I own and drive daily a '65 C20. I converted it over to front disc. It wasn't a difficult job, just don't buy the kit from CPP. You'd be better off finding a donor 73-87 C20 and using the parts off of it. One option, but nowadays is like finding a unicorn, is swapping in a rear end from a 2WD suburban that came with the 396/TH400/Dana 60. Those have 3.54 gears. Great ratio for highway cruising, but if hauling heavy loads or climbing steep grades the engine bogs down. A gear splitter overdrive would give you a 3rd/OD of about 4.42 final drive ratio. But the gear splitter is an added expense. I have seen some that buy a newer axle with the ratio they want, 3.73, 4.10, etc, and cut off the leaf spring perches, buy the rear control arm perches and weld them on. If you go that route you'll need an adjustable track/panhard bar, but you have plenty of options to keep that C20 in 3/4 ton form.

1972 C20 to C10 Conversion Help!


Hi Guys,

Been away for a while, just renewed my premium membership today.... thanks again for all your help in the past with many things!

I know there is plenty info on this forum about this subject and I have read lots of it lately, but there is many difference of opinions regarding the best way to complete this conversion and whether to use parts from donor trucks or to buy a kit and new parts.

Was hoping to get direct answers for my particular situation, all help and advice is greatly appreciated.

My Truck :

1972 C20 Cheyenne Custom Camper, very clean 89K original miles. I have the original engine, but have swapped it out with a 330 HP 350 crate with Vortec heads. TH350 w/ shift kit. Runs great, pretty quick for a heavy c20.


I would like to convert to 5 lug all the way around (stock c10), but I want a positrac rear end and I want to lower it a little for improved stance and maybe put american racing torque thrust type wheels on it (not sure on the wheels yet, many options)

I want to convert the rear brakes to disc as well.

Eventually would like to add an overdrive tranny like a 700R4 or the like.

I may eventually like to shorten the bed and frame but probably wont.

Currently I don't have power steering, but I was about to buy the conversion kit from Tuckers.

so...

whats the best course of action for me?

Do I buy a donor truck to get the needed parts? If so, what year and model?

Or do I buy new kits? If so, which kits and from where?

Also, can I go ahead and buy the power steering kit from Tuckers? I can still use the the same PS setup even if I do the C10 conversion later right? Don't want to buy something now if I'll have to buy something else later if not compatible.

Also, would I be better off selling my C20 and just buying a C10 instead?

My problem is I kinda hate to mess with such a nice C20 survivor, but the truck has sentimental value and my wife isn't cool with me selling it really...she likes it....but is ok with converting it....I really want a C10 but this truck became available for a good price and I didn't know what I know now....looking back I would of probably just saved my money and got a C10 later but it is what it is...I've got almost $20K in this truck already between the purchase price and all that i've done since I bought it. It's really solid and turns heads everywhere I go.


Please help!!!
