AIR/FUEL MIXTURE ADJUSTMENT:

Adjusting the CVK carburetor found on most GY6 engines is pretty easy, but you have to have a couple things sorted out before you start or it’s a waste of time.  The valves must be adjusted properly (.004” intake, .005” exhaust) and you must have a strong spark.  If the valves are way out of adjustment or there is weak (or no) spark, no amount of carb tuning will make the engine run well.  It should go without saying, but the fuel and vacuum hoses also need to be in good condition and hooked up the right way.

The basic idea of adjusting the CVK carb is to set the air/fuel mixture screw to provide the highest idle setting possible.  Most CVK carbs have the air/fuel mixture screw on the intake manifold side of the carburetor (toward the engine, away from the air filter).  Some stock carburetors come with a plug or a cap over the air/fuel mixture screw.  You can carefully drill this plug out, or just replace the whole carb with something better for about $25.00.

Start your scooter and let it run for 10 minutes to get the engine up to operating temperature and allow the auto-choke (enricher) to close completely.  If the carburetor is so far out of adjustment that the scooter won’t start, turn the air/fuel mixture screw all the way in until it stops, then turn it back out about 2 turns as a baseline setting.  If it still won’t start after that, it’s time to clean or replace the carb.

While dialing in the air/fuel mixture, you will most likely have to adjust your idle speed down a bit.  If the scoot tries to move on its own while you are tuning it, the idle is way too high.  Set the idle around 1,000-1,400 RPM if you have a tachometer.  If you can put a couple blocks under the engine to raise the rear wheel slightly off the ground, you can just adjust the idle speed until the engine is running smoothly, but the rear wheel doesn’t turn until you give it a little bit of throttle.

When you start adjusting the carb, the air fuel mix could be too rich, or too lean.  Taking a look at your spark plug can give you a pretty good idea which it is, but it’s simple enough to just try adjusting in both directions that it’s probably not worth the time and effort.

1)  TO MAKE THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE RICHER:
Turn the Air/Fuel Mixture COUNTER CLOCKWISE 1/4 turn and wait about 30 seconds to allow the engine to respond to the new setting.
a. If the RPM’s go up, repeat step 1 in ¼ turn increments until the RPM’s begin to drop.
b. Once you find the setting where the RPM’s begin to drop, turn the Air/Fuel mixture screw about 1/8 turn CLOCKWISE and that should be close to the ideal Air/Fuel mixture setting.

If the engine RPM’s drop on the FIRST 1/4 turn from the starting point, turn the screw back to the starting position and wait 30 seconds until the engine responds, then go to #2

2)  TO MAKE THE AIR/FUEL MIXTURE LEANER:
Turn the Air/Fuel Mixture CLOCKWISE 1/4 turn and wait about 30 seconds to allow the engine to respond to the new setting.
a. If the RPM’s go up, repeat step 1 in ¼ turn increments until the RPM’s begin to drop.
b. Once you find the setting where the RPM’s begin to drop, turn the Air/Fuel mixture screw about 1/8 turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE and that should be close to the ideal Air/Fuel Mixture setting.

3)  IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT:
After dialing in the air/fuel mixture, turn the idle speed screw until the engine runs smooth and doesn’t try to take off on its own.

4)  NOTHING HAPPENED?

If the engine RPM’s don’t change at all after trying to adjust the mixture in both directions, you most likely have a badly clogged pilot jet.  Assuming the engine was completely warmed up and the auto-choke circuit is working properly, it’s time to remove the carb and give it a thorough cleaning or replace it with a new one.

A carburetor has an important function on your go-kart; it ensures that your engine receives the optimal air-fuel mixture. Running on a lean fuel mixture can lead to misfires and loss of low-end torque, whereas running on a rich fuel mixture can lead to engine knocking and poor fuel economy.

Therefore it’s extremely important to ensure that the carburetor on your go-kart is set correctly. There are two screws that you can adjust, in order to ensure that your engine receives the right fuel mixture and that it has the right idle speed. 

Here are the two carburetor adjustments for your go-kart:

  1. Air-fuel Adjustment 
  2. Idle Adjustment

As  you can see in the illustration below, there are two different set screws that you can adjust. The first screw is the pilot screw, which lets you adjust the air-fuel mixture. The second screw is the idle screw and let’s you set the idle speed.

In this guide, we’ll be taking a closer look at how to adjust your go-kart carburetor. You should only make adjustments if you notice your go-kart not performing optimally, if you’re setting up your carb for the first time or if your carburetor was previously incorrectly calibrated.

1. Air-Fuel Adjustment (Pilot Screw)

The first adjustment that I will guide you through is the air-fuel adjustment, which ensures that your go-kart engine receives the optimal air-fuel mixture. In order to achieve this, you’ll need to locate the pilot screw. 

Where to Find the Pilot Screw

The pilot screw is usually located on the air intake side of the carburetor, which is attached to the intake manifold and the air filter. You may use the image above as a reference. 

In some carburetors, the pilot screw is located on the fuel inlet instead. If the adjustment screw is located near the fuel inlet, it’s referred to as a fuel screw and if it’s located near the air intake, it’s called an air screw. Generally, these screws are referred to as pilot screws. 

How to Adjust the Air-Fuel Ratio

The function of the pilot screw is to restrict or increase air/fuel flow into the carburetor depending on where it’s located (air intake or fuel inlet). By adjusting the inflow of air or fuel, you’ll be able to ensure that your engine receives the optimal air-fuel ratio. 

  1. Lightly fasten the pilot screw – Firstly, turn the pilot screw in clockwise until it’s seated. You can do this with any compatible screwdriver. Remember not to tighten the screw and stop the moment you feel some form of light resistance. 
  1. Return to factory setting – The first step was done to give you a reference point. Now, turn the screw counterclockwise (loosen it) by 2 full turns. This is the factory setting and should typically be optimal for your go-kart. 
  1. Finalize air-fuel adjustment – In this step you should turn your engine on and let it run. You should listen closely and observe if your engine is receiving the right mixture of air and fuel. You will also need to take your go-kart for a ride, as you’ll also need to test it at different RPMs.

It’s important to listen to the go-kart engine sound carefully and test your carburetor adjustments. If you observe that the engine is bogging, the fuel mixture is too lean and you’ll need to adjust the pilot screw to restrict the amount of air that goes into the carburetor. You can do this by tightening the pilot screw slightly. 

If the mixture is too fuel rich, you’ll notice that the engine is sputtering. In that case, loosen the pilot screw to let in more air into the mixture. Remember to always make small adjustments and test your new air-fuel settings through various RPM ranges. 

Tightening the air-fuel screw restricts the air intake and makes the fuel richer.
Loosening the air-fuel screw increases the air intake and makes the fuel leaner.

General rule for adjusting the air-fuel mixture

Idle Adjustment (Idle Screw)

The second adjustment that you can set is the engine idle speed, which is done through the idle screw on your carburetor. An engine running at a low idle speed can lead to vibrations and can cause the engine to shut off. If the idle speed is too high, you’ll be burning more fuel. Therefore, having the engine run at the optimal idle speed is important.

Where to Find the Idle Screw

As you can see from the reference image above, the idle screw is typically found on the neck (center) of the carburetor and increases or reduces air-fuel flow into the go-kart engine. 

As not all carburetors look the same. Therefore, some idle screws look similar to the air-fuel screw that require a screwdriver, while others are finger screws that allow for easier adjustments. 

How to Adjust the Idle Speed

The function of the idle screw is to enable you to set the idle speed of your go-kart engine. The idle screw controls the amount of air and fuel enters the engine and the more you let the carburetor pump in, the higher the idle speed of the engine. Conversely, the less air and fuel enters the engine, the lower the idle speed. 

Depending on the screw type, use a suitable screwdriver or your fingers to set the idle speed. You’ll need to do this with the engine switched on and in neutral gear. 

Let the engine idle and observe the sounds and behaviour of the engine idling. If the engine idle speed is too low, turn the idle screw clockwise to allow more fuel and air to enter the engine. 

On other hand, if the idle speed is too high, turn the idle screw counterclockwise to restrict fuel and air flow to the engine. The trick here is to try several adjustments and develop a feel for it. Practice makes perfect!

Scooter Carburetor Adjustment

If there's any one component that's more likely to go out of adjustment on your scooter (especially perhaps your Chinese scooter!), it's the carburetor. If it does go out of adjustment lots of things can happen. It can make the scooter hard to start, it can make the scooter slow to accelerate, it can cause the scooter to idle badly and stall or it can make the scooter idle fast so that it's trying to go all the time and needs the brake to hold it stationary. None of these things are good.

What the carburetor does is regulate the amount of fuel and air which are supplied to the engine. To go faster you need more fuel and more air and they must be in the right proportion. The fuel also has to be atomized as much as possible (i.e. be supplied in tiny droplets). The carburetor controls all these functions and generally does it quite well.

The type of carburetor used on most 150cc GY6 type engines is a Keihin style CV carburetor with a 24mm throat. Keihin design carburetors are a well tried and tested design developed in Japan (Keihin is a region near Tokyo).

Without removing and disassembling the carburetor, there are only two adjustments you can make, but these should take care of most minor problems. The first is the adjustment of the idle speed.

Scooter Carburetor Adjustment - Idle Speed

Above is a picture of a typical GY6 engine carburetor and the view is that from the right side of most engine configurations on 150cc Chinese scooters. There's a small spring loaded screw which adjusts the idle speed. It's right next to the throttle control which is connected to the twist grip on the right handlebar. On most 150cc scooters, idle speed should be around 1500rpm when the engine is fully warmed up. Don't make adjustments when the engine is cold. Take a 5 or 10 minute ride first. When the engine is cold the automatic choke is in operation and that can change the idle speed. If you have a tachometer, setting the speed is easy. If you don't, you want to set the speed to a low idle. Fast enough so that the engine doesn't stumble or stall, but slow enough that the clutch doesn't engage and try to move the scooter forward. On most scooters from 50cc to 250cc, this will be somewhere in the 1500-2000rpm region.

The other adjustment you can make is to the low speed fuel/air ("mixture") ratio. This is done on most scooters using a screw adjustment on the other side of the carburetor as shown below.

This screw changes the air to fuel ratio at low speeds. It shouldn't need much adjustment, but the way to do it is to turn the screw very slightly (1/8th turn) and see if the idle speed goes up or down. If it goes down, turn the screw back 1/8th turn to where it started, then 1/8 turn in the other direction and see if the idle speed goes up or down. If it goes down, turn it back to where you started since you didn't need any adjustment! If the idle speed goes up, continue turning the screw in 1/8th turn steps until the idle speed is at a maximum. If it starts to go down, turn it back to get the maximum idle speed.

You may need to go back to the idle speed screw to lower the idle speed if it's now too fast. So the basic procedure is to set the fuel/air mixture to give you the fastest idle, then use the idle speed adjustment to set the speed to the lowest rpm that gives you smooth running.

If the scooter idles well and runs fine at low speed, but has problems at high speed, the problem may lie inside the carburetor with the main jet. The fuel/air ratio at higher speeds is set by the jets inside the carburetor and to get at them the carburetor has be be removed and disassembled. This can be a tricky job as the parts are small and delicate. The good news is that these carburetors are quite cheap. You can get a new one for $50-$60, so if you can't make your scooter run smoothly and you don't like the idea of taking the carburetor apart, you can always replace it!
