Superbook is the Bible brought to life through animation—a timeless form of storytelling—to introduce children to Jesus and help develop their faith.

More than an animation series, Superbook lets children experience and interact with Bible stories using the Superbook Bible App and the Superbook Kids website. Both are engaging and powerful tools accessible in any place, at any time. And for church use, Superbook Academy is an exciting digital curriculum designed for children’s ministry, based on the animation series with in-depth lesson plans, activities, and crafts to challenge students to go deeper into God’s Word.

Millions have come to know Jesus as their Savior through Superbook. Now, partners are joining with us in the Superbook Project—helping produce more episodes, translate into more world languages, create mobile apps, websites, and curriculum for children to experience—in their own language.

The Superbook Project works closely with local churches and community ministries to develop resources for vital follow-up and discipleship. Superbook is so much more than entertainment for children. Where these animated episodes end, life-changing stories begin.

Superbook, also known as Animated Parent and Child Theatre (アニメ 親子劇場, Anime Oyako Gekijō),[1] is an anime television series from the early s, initially produced at Tatsunoko Productions in Japan in conjunction with the Christian Broadcasting Network in the United States and more recently solely produced by CBN for global distribution and broadcast.[2][3]

The series chronicled the events of the Bible's Old and New Testaments in its episode run. The first 26 episodes aired from October 1, to March 25, The series returned as Superbook II: In Search for Ruffles and Return to the 20th Century (パソコントラベル探偵団, Pasokon Toraberu Tanteidan, lit. Personal Computer Travel Detective Team) with 26 episodes to air from April 4, to September 26, Between both series in the first run was the companion series The Flying House. The Christian Broadcasting Network is producing a new Superbook series and has released 5 seasons.[4] CBN is distributing the first, second and third seasons for free on their Superbook Kid's Website.[5]

Original series[edit]

The first series, Superbook (Anime Oyako Gekijo), begins at the home of a young boy named Christopher "Chris" Peeper, who discovers the ancient Bible named Superbook that can speak and send him, his friend Joy (Azusa Yamato), and his clockwork toy figure named Gizmo the Crusader Robot back in time during the events of the Old and New Testaments. The second series, Superbook II: In Search for Ruffles and Return to the 20th Century (Pasokon Travel Tanteidan), takes place two years after the first series, where Superbook falls onto a computer, giving anybody the ability to see into the past from Christopher's home via the monitor. Ruffles, his poodle, has managed to get lost in time, prompting Gizmo and Christopher's little brother (rewritten as his cousin in the English dub), Uriah "Uri" Peeper, to search for Ruffles. While Chris and Joy keep watch and control of the computer from the present, Gizmo and Uri experience the stories from the Old Testament solely.

Reboot series[edit]

Set in the 23rd century AD, a boy named Christopher "Chris" Quantum, who always has problems, travels with his friends Joy and Gizmo through Superbook back to the Biblical times from the Old Testament and New Testament.

Cast and Characters[edit]

Original series[edit]

  • Christopher "Chris" Peeper (voiced by Sho Asuka): The main hero of the series, who is Professor Quantum's son and Gizmo's former owner.
  • Joy (voiced by Azusa Yamato): Chris' next-door neighbor and best friend.
  • Gizmo the Crusading Robot (voiced by Zenmaijikake): The name of two characters, depending on the season. In season one, he is Chris' advanced toy figure that can become a real life robot. Then in season two, Gizmo became a real life sized robot built by Uri's father.
  • Uriah "Uri" Peeper (voiced by Yuu Asuka): Chris' cousin and Gizmo's current owner.
  • Professor Frederick "Fred" Peeper (voiced by Professor Asuka): A scientist who is Christopher's father.
  • Ruffles (voiced by Kikyomu): Chris' and Uri's Yorkshire Terrier poodle.
  • Superbook (voiced by Ray Owens): An ancient Bible that takes Chris, Joy, Gizmo, and Uri back to the Old and New Testament era.

Reboot series[edit]

  • Christopher "Chris" J. Quantum (voiced by Samuel Vincent): An awesome skateboarder, video gamer and lead guitarist in a garage band with his Valleyview Middle School buddies. He uncovers the secrets of Superbook through a mysterious portal to the past.
  • Joy Pepper (voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent): Next-door neighbor, best friend, and classmate of Chris Quantum at Valleyview Middle School. She is outgoing and usually a bit more adventurous than Chris. She loves soccer, is athletic, and great at other sports as well.
  • Gizmo (voiced by Cathy Weseluck): A robot created by Chris’ dad, Professor Quantum, to protect both Chris and Joy, but they end up protecting him. He loves upgrades to make himself more useful and would rather stay in the lab than time-travel with Superbook. A really cool feature of Gizmo is that he can change his appearance as needed.
  • Superbook (voiced by Colin Murdock): A device that takes Chris, Joy, and Gizmo through a portal to travel back in the Old and New Testament era during biblical times.
  • Professor Crispin Quantum (voiced by Jan Rabson): A scientist and inventor who is Chris' father, Phoebe's husband, and Gizmo's creator.
  • Phoebe Quantum (voiced by Nicole Oliver): Chris' mother and Crispin's wife.
